Salient Achievements

I Salient Achievements and Present work under progress

Focus: The focus of research in component of Family Resource Management under AICRP is to devise women friendly technologies to reduce drudgery of women in home, farm and allied fields.

A. Inventory of Activities and identification of Drudgery Prone tasks:

Inventory of activities of women of entire Himachal. Pradesh state showed that women in Himachal Pradesh are participating in multidimensional, time consuming and drudgery prone tasks particularly in farm, allied and household sphere respectively and it was recommended to design women friendly technologies for the most drudgery prone tasks to reduce their stress and strain in work and enhance work efficiency.

 B. Assessment of Health Status of Farm women of Himachal Pradesh

Health status of rural women was assessed on the basis of body mass index, physical fitness index and aerobic capacity of women and it was observed that maximum women had low weight, thin body, average physical fitness status but good aerobic capacity.

C. Ergonomic cost of Drudgery Prone Tasks

Ergonomic cost of selected drudgery prone task (viz. tea plucking, fodder cutting and collection, weeding, transplanting, dung plastering, washing of clothes, cutting and uprooting, clod breaking, bamboo strip smoothening) was found above permissible limits of workload for women leading to deterioration of their health. Muscular stress, wrong postures adopted during work lead to severe pains in different body parts.

D. Women Friendly Tools and Technologies (Designed, Developed and Modified by AICRP- FRM) more.......

     a. Tea plucking activity  (Finger blades, Kilta with detachable umbrella, Water proof dress with gum shoes, TLC Waist Bag)

Finger Blades

Kilta with detachable Umbrella

Wrap Around and Ergonomically designed water proof dress

Tea leaves collection waist bag

Above mentioned tools were designed to reduce drudgery of women involved in tea plucking. Kilta and finger blades are being popularized in University and adjoining tea farms.

    b. Cutting and collection of fodder

Innovative fodder collector have been designed and tested to gather and bundle the fodder with minimum bending. Improved sickles have been popularized for cutting fodder and various crops.

Fodder Collector

    c. Two weeders have been designed and tested to lessen the drudgery during weeding of potato, maize and other crops.

    d.  Cutting and uprooting: Cutter and fawra have been improved and tested for cutting and uprooting of maize crop.

e. Clod Breaking: Improved clod breaker has been tested ergonomically and found suitable

f. Bamboo strip Smoothening: The strip of bamboo that is used in weaving of baskets is smoothened first with a darat and stick which are held together.

II    Capacity building

All tested improved and newly designed tools improved the work posture, reduced physiological and muscular stress, enhanced work efficiency, reduced time cost and stress on cardiac and physiological cost of work.

V. Application in rural area for adoption

a. Village Morla has been adopted to test the simple tools technologies for popularization and adoption.

b. Technology Kit has been developed comprising need based household, agricultural and allied tools for adoption by rural masses. The Kit has been sent to KVK Dhaulakuan and will be sent to KVK Una.

c. Slide Show of technology kit prepared.

d. Video C.D of tea plucking technologies have been prepared

e. The state department of Agriculture has collaborated to popularize vermi composting and tea units of vermi compost have been installed in the adopted village.

f. Four drainage pits have been prepared as demonstration units.

g. Booklet has been prepared containing detailed specifications of designs of improved tools and has been demanded by State department of Agriculture for multiplication and dissemination in the entire state.

h.    Data were collected on 150 women respondents from five different villages of Kangra District have been.

All India Coordinated Research project

 * Data on Technology interventions for drudgery reduction in agriculture were  collected on 200 farm families from five different villages viz Sidhpur Sarkari, Rani Sidhpur, Gankhetar, Panapar and Banuri adopted by Home Science College under AICRP. The data were computed, compiled and analyzed. The results revealed that the tillage preparation was the most drudgery prone task of all the farm activities out of which again clod breaking was perceived to be a back breaking activity. People possessed the basic tools required for performing these agricultural tasks and were not much aware about the new and latest farm implements/technologies. The respondents suffered from fatigue, backache, headache, body ache, cuts and injuries while performing any task related to farm, household or animal husbandry occupations.

 *  Data on Technology Interventions for drudgery reduction in rural enterprises were collected on a sample of 30 women and the results showed the existing enterprises already in process were soap making, herbal product processing, weaving, bag making and floriculture.

*    Data on Empowerment of women in the Resource Management Practices were collected on a sample of 100 women from the five adopted villages and the results showed that taps were the major source of water for drinking purpose and kuhl was the major source for irrigation. Fuel wood was the main energy source for cooking good.

*    Data on clod breaking activity were collected, coded and analyzed in order to devise a clod breaker. The health status of farm women involved in performing the cutting and uprooting activity was assessed.

*    Data on bamboo strip smoothening was also collected on a sample of thirty farm women involved in the making of bamboo baskets. Thus, keeping in mind their working style a new bamboo strip smoothener was developed for making the activity of strip smoothening easy for the women.

*    Data on Resource Management Practices of women is being collected to find  out the knowledge and awareness level of farm families regarding fuel and energy management, fuel, labor and time efficient devices, hygiene and sanitation, water management technologies, water conservation and income management.
