The Centre was initially established in 1962 as Crop Research Station of the Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana. It was later on transferred to Agricultural Complex of Himachal Pradesh University in 1970 and became a part of Himachal Pradesh Krishi Vishva Vidyalaya, Palampur in November, 1978. This Centre was upgraded to the status of Regional Research Station in 1981. In 2002, after reorganization of Research and Extension Systems of the university, this station was renamed as Hill Agricultural Research and Extension Centre (HAREC), Bajaura.
