Major
Research Achievements
-
Genetic evaluation of exotic ,
crossbred and indigenous germplasm among various domesticated livestock
species (Cattle, Sheep, Rabbit, Poultry etc.) in the state based on
institutional herds and farmers herds/ flocks and formulated breeding
strategy for their further improvement.
-
Comparative evaluation of
crossbred and graded cattle under field conditions to identify suitable
genetic make up for agro climatic conditions of the state.
-
Characterization
(Morphological, Quantitative , Molecular ) of various domesticated livestock
resources (AnGR) of the state among cattle (Hill cattle), Sheep
(Gaddi,
Rampur- bushair) , Goat (Gaddi, Chegu) yak
(Himachali
Yak) and equines (Chamurthi horse, Spiti donkey).
-
In –situ and ex-situ breed
conservation programmes for threatened/ endangered breeds of livestock like
Chegu goats, Chamurthi horses.
-
Improvement of migratory sheep
and goats under farmer’s flocks.
-
Morphological, genetic,
behavioural and physiological studies on Red jungle fowl and undertaking
their captive breeding.
-
Development of poultry stock
suitable for rural backyard poultry production in the state using indigenous
germplasm.
-
Dissemination of production technologies in
different livestock species including cattle, sheep, goat, rabbit and
poultry.
Priority Areas of Research
-
Identification,
documentation and characterization of rare AnGR of H.P.
-
Conservation of
threatened/endangered livestock resources of H.P.
-
Molecular characterization of all livestock
resources of H.P., Identification of genetic markers associated with unique
traits and undertaking marker assisted selection/breeding for genetic
improvement.
-
Institutional sheep and goat breeding
programme for production of improver Rams and bucks.
-
Development of dual type poultry stock
suitable for rural backyard poultry production.
-
Improvement in productivity of migratory
livestock (Sheep, Goat).
