Chaudhary Sarvan Kumar KrishVishvavidyalya Research Sub-Station, Leo, District Kinnaur was established in 1987 is situated at about 2,900m a.m.s.l. The station comes under dry temperate region (Zone -IV) also known as cold dessert region. The area is characterized by no or very less rain fall during summer and heavy snow fall in winters. The crops are grown mostly on steep slopes and in valleys. Single crop in a year is a common feature of farming in most parts as it snows heavily in these areas during winter and no agricultural activity is possible as such during winter months. The cropping season of this region is very short starting from the month of April to October. Among pulses, rajmash and peas are the main crops. Apple is the main cash crop of this area which occupies about 80% of the total cultivated area beside apple, stone fruits (almond and apricot) and nut especially pistachio have great potential in this area.
