Agro techniques for improving seed quality during storage and processing
A. Hybrid Maize[Zea mays (L.)]
Soybean [Glycine max (L.)]
High density polyethylene interwoven non-laminated (HDPE) bags are suitable for commerical storage of hybrid maize for one planting season provided insect-free and dry seed (moisture ~ 10%) are stored.
Final count of germination may be used as an indicator of seed vigour index for Hybrid Maize, whereas, accelerated ageing for 96 hrs. can be used to assess the seed storability.
Polymer coating @ 3 ml/kg seed diluted with 5 ml of water followed by seed treatment with either flowable thiram @ 2.4ml/kg or vitavax 200 @ 2gm/kg is beneficial for improving the seed quality and storability of Soybeen varieties.
The germination in marginal seed lots of soybean can be improved by 5% through specific gravity separation.
Wheat [Triticum aestivum (L.)]
Certified seeds of wheat can be revalidated for 6 months provided insect-pest free and dry (moisture content ~ 12%) seeds are stored in high density polyethylene interwoven non-laminated (HDPE ) bag.
Marginal seed lots of onion (65% germination) improved upto 71% germination level through specific gravity separation to meet the minimum seed certification standards, though during reprocessing seed rejection upto 16.7% was observed.
