CSKHPAU to conduct left out exams of B.Sc. final year; also extends date for Ph.D. applications
Palampur 20 August. CSK Himachal Pradesh Agriculture University has decided to conduct the left out mid-term examinations and end-term examinations of 2nd semester of the B.Sc. 3rd-year students (Life Sciences and Physical Sciences). These examinations will be held with effect from 28 August to 10 September. Standard operating procedure for the conduct of examinations will be observed. The students have been advised to contact the Dean of College of Basic Sciences.
The University has also given relief to the aspirants of Ph.D. programmes as the University has extended the last date for the receipt of application forms for merit-based admissions to the doctoral programmes for the academic year 2020-21 up to 31 August. Details of both decisions are available on the University website.

Independence Day celebrations at the University
Independence Day was celebrated at the university as per the Govt. instructions, all social distancing norms were followed, and a very limited number of staff including Statutory Officers and Heads of Deptt were invited to the ceremony. Chief Guest Dr.Mandeep Sharma, Director of Research-cum-Dean, COVAS, unfurled the National Flag. In his brief speech, he remembered the freedom fighters and national heroes for their sacrifices. He also elaborated about the tremendous progress of the nation, especially in the areas of agriculture and new announcements for the welfare of farmers by the Hon'ble Prime Minister in today's address to the nation from the Red Fort. Besides, Shri Pankaj Sharma, HAS, Registrar, other statutory officers were also present in the ceremony which concluded with the distribution of sweets.

Weather advisory service to improve in Himachal Pradesh
"Meghdoot" App seamlessly aggregates crop wise advisories at district level issued by Agro-Met Field Units (AMFUs) established in various farm institutes. Gramin Krishi Mausam Service (GKMS) unit has been established in the University which is issuing such advisories for four districts of Chamba, Hamirpur, Una and Kangra on every Tuesday and Friday for the farmers' benefit. Now, to extend the network at district level, District Agro-Met Units (DAMUs) have been established recently at KVKs Mandi, Sirmour and Bilaspur. Staff has been recruited and trained for these services. Another useful app "DAMINI" for monitoring and alerts for the lightning activity in advance by 35-45 minutes for the benefit of farmers and others is also being popularised at grassroots level.
Prof. Ashok Kumar Sarial, Vice-Chancellor has exhorted the farming community and general masses to download these useful Apps to enhance productivity, reduce crop losses and save precious lives from lightening. He told that the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) and the Indian Council of Agricultural Research ( ICAR) in collaboration with State Agricultural Universities and other institutes are jointly extending the network to district level by setting up of DAMUs at KVKs in 530 districts in addition to existing 130 AMFUs under GKMS to empower the farmers with weather based Agromet Advisory Services at block level. Presently, advisories are being disseminated to farmers through multi-channel dissemination system including mKisan portal.
Dr. Ranbir Singh Rana, Nodal officer of GKMS Proejct in the University told that 200 SMS have been sent to 2.89 lakh registered farmers of Chamba, Hamirpur Kangra and Una through mKisan portal in the last three years. Farmers can register on mKisan portal for weather alert and advisory. Theses Apps, developed by IMD, can be downloaded from the google play store.

More Basmati area under Pusa- 1121 means more income to the farmers: Prof A.K.Sarial, VC,HPAU
Palampur 22 June. Paddy sowing in northern states, especially in Punjab and Haryana is in full swing. Such is the desperation that labourers who left Punjab and Haryana during lockdown have been transported back from remote districts of Bihar by the progressive farmers to help them in sowing operations. Rice millers and exporters have been issuing appeals in print and electronic media to the farmers for growing Basmati varieties like Pusa-1121 and Pusa-1718.As Basmati rice has huge overseas market in addition to very good demand in domestic market also so there is emphasis for planting these two varieties.
Basmati rice has harmonious combination of grain and cooking quality traits like easy digestibility and pleasant aroma and is protected under GI for its cultivation in north -western part of Indo-gangetic region covering states of Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Uttrakhand, Jammu and western UP.
Prof A.K.Sarial, Vice-Chancellor, H.P. Agriculture University, who has the credit to develop world's longest grain Basmati variety Pusa Basmati-1121, told that it is a multi-billion dollar forex earner variety. PusaBasmati-1121 occupies more than 70 per cent area of total Basmati acreage in the country and contributes annually to approximate Rs. 18000 crore forex earning. It led India to attain number one position in the world since 2011 leaving behind USA, Vietnam, Thailand and Pakistan.
Prof Sarial, who received Indian Council of Agricultural Research recognition award and Jawahar Lal Nehru Award for outstanding PG research for this variety told that out of several Basmati varieties grown in Haryana, Punjab, UP, UK, J&K , and H.P., Pusa Basmati-1121 continues to be the first choice of farmers since 2008. In HP Pusa Basmati-1121 covered an acreage of 3500 hectares (20%) of the basmati area during Kharif 2019.
The Vice-Chancellor informed that Pusa Basmati- 1121 is an extraordinary variety characterized by extra long grains with cooked kernel length upto 22mm, high volume expansion after cooking with a pleasant aroma. It has an average yield of 4.5 tons per hectare as compared to 2.5 ton per hectare of traditional Basmati. Because of its high profitability, excellent grain and cooking quality, it is adored by the farming community, traders and consumers. It is sold in more than 80 brand names like India Gate Classic, Maharani, Kohinor Gold, Shakti Bhog Prime 1121, etc
Prof Sarial told that farmers should be educated to restrict use of pesticides and must not use prohibited chemicals in this crop otherwise its export quality may receive setback as the consumers are very particular about the use of chemicals in crops. He told that research work on Basmati 1121 was still in progress to incorporate resistance to insect pests and diseases so that problem of pesticide residues is permanently addressed and its production is made sustainable. Besides, genes for short duration are also being introduced to advance its maturity before the onset of low temperature in hills. He told that an improved version of Pusa Basmati 1121 that is Pusa Basmati -1718 with resistance to bacterial blight has been released by the Indian Agricultural Research Institute. He said that these two varieties have been able to reduce pesticide use and consumer safety resulting better price realization from importing countries and the domestic market. That was the reason that several rice millers and export bodies were exhorting the farmers to grow theses Basmati varieties. Prof Sarial expressed the hope that these improved Basmati varieties can help Basmati farmers in doubling their income.

Effective steps by CSKHPAU to mitigate the effects of COVID on students and farmers: Vice-Chancellor Prof Ashok Kumar Sarial
Palampur 10 June. "The University understands that the COVID-19 and the lockdown have pushed youngsters into a quandary due to uncertainty over academic schedules and job prospects. Hence, we made efforts to provide online platform to prepare students to complete the course work of the current academic year and motivate them for tomorrow's knowledge-intensive and technology-driven work environment,' informed Prof Ashok Kumar Sarial, Vice-Chancellor, CSK H.P. Agriculture University during a Press Conference, here today.The Vice-Chancellor told that the students were advised and guided to attend various webinars organized by different universities and organizations. The University continued Rural Agricultural Work Experience in villages and internship in Veterinary Hospitals of final year agriculture and veterinary students respectively for completing their degree programmes in time as well as released admission notification and accepting online applications for ensuing academic session as per UGC and ICAR schedules.Prof Sarial said that the University was particular to keep in touch with farming community through all print, electronic and social media tools to advise them on harvesting of Rabi season crops with all COVID-19 preventive measures. The Vice-Chancellor himself took initiatives to prepare detailed crop advisory and also recorded video messages for them. The farmers were given timely advice on field preparation and sowing of kharif crops also. He told that Agro-advisories during this lockdown period were provided to the farmers using social media platforms especially Whatsapp groups created for the purpose. During the period 13 message were sent to 85,700 farmers. Queries related to agricultural and veterinary aspects were also entertained on the mobile phones. To promote kitchen gardening, around 50,000 seedlings of summer vegetables raised at the University vegetable farm and KVK were sold to the local farmers of adjoining villages. He said that all the essential activities in the University continued. These included treatment of ailing animals in the Veterinary Clinics daily for emergency as well as routine cases. The activities of livestock farm, poultry farm, Feed unit and other related works were also continued. Around 400 clinical cases were diagnosed and treated in veterinary clinics.The Vice-Chancellor informed that during the lockdown,three research project proposals worth Rs. 72.00 lakh have been sanctioned to this University by the different agencies, respectively and four research project proposals on different thematic areas worth Rs. 1233.00 lakh have been submitted to different funding agencies. This includes a research project worth Rs 11.50 crore to set up COVID-19 testing facility.The University produced around 300 quintal breeder seed of improved wheat varieties from its Seed Production Farm at main campus. It is double the quantity which was being produced in 2016. This will enable Himachal Pradesh to become self-sufficient in wheat seed requirement. The University extensively utilized approved University social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter and Facebook to provide urgent and other requisite timely information to other stakeholders like staff and retirees. Besides regular Video messages by the Vice-Chancellor, all Deans recorded and uploaded Video messages for the students.The Vice-Chancellor also expressed his gratitude to the Governor, H.P. and Chancellor of the University for appreciating the University for delivering its best to the students and farming community during the pandemic. He answered to the questions of the reporters informing them fee for various academic programmes was lowest among several neighbouring farm varsities yet fee relief has been given to the students and seats have been increased in PG programes. He told that the university and its students extended help to the administration during the tough times. The staff also donated Rs.36.00 lakh to the Government. CSKHPAU Webinar on 'Awareness Program on Control of Desert Locust'
Palampur 6 June. CSK Himachal Pradesh Agriculture University organized a Webinar on ‘Awareness Program on Control of Desert Locust’ today.
Dr.Parvinder Kaushal, Vice-Chancellor, Dr Y.S.Parmar University of Horticulture & Forestry, Solan, as Chief Guest, appreciated the proactive approach and initiative of the CSKHPAU and advocated creating joint teams of the State Departments of Agriculture, Horticulture and Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) to initiate massive awareness programmers at district level. He also suggested arranging adequate quantity of chemical and spraying machinery to control the locust, if need be.
Guest of Honour Prof Ashok Kumar Sarial, Vice-Chancellor of the host University told that it was in the last week only that the Govt. of H.P. had formed an inter departmental group, including this University, to monitor and take effective steps to protect the State from the locust invasion and its adverse impact. He said that the farmers will be made aware about the threat of this locust and ways to protect their crops. The Vice-Chancellor suggested advising farmers to take precautionary measures to prevent the invasion by locust swarms in their fields. He said that KVKs will be involved in creating awareness among farmers in border districts like Una, Kangra,Solan,Sirmour,etc. to increase the surveillance and strict monitoring the movement of locust swarms in adjoining State so that immediate preventive measures were initiated.
Dr.Y.P.Thakur, Director of Extension Education, informed that printed literature in simple Hindi has been printed and will be distributed among farmers, besides using print, electronic and social media to educate them. He said that the University has already instructed KVK extension specialists to start massive campaigns to educate the farmers.
Dr.D.K. Vatsa, Director Research told that around seventy officers and scientists from both farm universities and state departments of agriculture and horticulture took part in the webinar. Some progressive farmers also participated.
Dr.R.S.Chandel, Professor & Head, Deptt. of Entomology presented a detailed paper on locust and its control measures.

CSKHPAU celebrates World Environment Day
Palampur 5 June. World Environment Day was celebrated enthusiastically at CSK H.P. Agriculture University, here today. Prof A.K.Sarial, Vice-Chancellor planted a sapling of Deodar plant in the campus.
While interacting with statutory officers,head of the departments and others, the Vice-Chancellor said that it was a matter of pride for all staff members and students that the University was known as a green, clean and smoke free campus. He asked them to spread awareness about the importance of protecting environment among general masses so that all join hands to preserve rich biodiversity in the picturesque Himachal Pradesh. The Vice-Chancellor also underlined the importance of preserving and propagating flora and fauna, energy and water conservation and exhorted the staff to shun using non-biodegradable daily use items like disposable cup-plates, plastic bags, etc. Around three dozen saplings of Deodar (Cedrus deodara) were planted alongside the compound wall near gate number three of the University. This large evergreen coniferous tree has a conic crown with level branches and drooping branchlets. Many people worship it as a divine tree. This plant is used in Ayurvedic medicines and its inner wood is aromatic and used to make incense. It is distilled into essential oil which acts as insect repellent. Palampur 6 May. CSK H.P. Agriculture University has contributed Rs.36.04 lakh to 'HP SDMA COVID-19 State Disaster Response Fund'.
Prof Ashok Kumar Sarial, Vice-Chancellor told that this was a humble contribution of the University employees and pensioners to strengthen the hands of Chief Minister to fight against the unprecedented medical emergency. The Vice-Chancellor appreciated the support of the University community as staff unions and pensioners came forward to contribute their one day gross salary and pension for this cause. The Vice-Chancellor said that of the total Rs. 36 lakh contributions, Rs 13.16 lakh include pensioners' share .The amount was credited in the Government account.

COVID-19 economic hardships relief
CSKHPAU takes decisions to ease hardship to students: Vice-Chancellor Prof A.K.Sarial
Palampur 30 April. Due to COVID-19 pandemic, CSK Himachal Pradesh Agriculture University has taken several decisions to ease hardship to the students.
According to Prof Ashok Kumar Sarial, Vice-Chancellor, a special meeting of the academic council was held recently to take stock of the situation arisen due to lockdown and economic hardships to the students and their parents. He told that it has been decided that the enhancement of fee for filling up online application for entrance test based admission for B.V.Sc & A.H., B.Sc. (Hons.) Agriculture M.Sc. Ag. & M.V.Sc. degree programmes and fee for submitting off line application for merit based admissions for B.Sc. Physical Sciences, B.Sc. Life Sciences, B.Tech.(Food Technology), B.Sc. (Hons.) Community Science and Doctoral programmes for Academic Year 2020-21 shall be withdrawn and remain same as per previous year as mentioned in Information Brochure and Prospectus for entrance based and merit based admissions for undergraduate and postgraduate programmes of University for Academic Year 2019-20.
The Vice-Chancellor said that it has been decided that the balance fee will be reimbursed to those candidates who have already applied and deposited the enhanced fee for online or off line applications for both the programmes. For observing social distancing norms to prevent the spread of COVID-19 as per the instructions issued by the government, the centers of entrance test at different locations will be enhanced.
Prof Sarial said that the academic council has also decided to enhance intake capacity in M.Sc. Agriculture degree programmes with ten additional seats. He said that to facilitate the maximum number of students to take admission in this prestigious University, self financing seats in various undergraduate and postgraduate programmes will be retained so that the students were not compelled to move to private colleges with very high fee structure. Many of such colleges were not accredited by the ICAR. In order to avoid hardship to meritorious candidates, the admission of the students of SC and ST category is made on the 100 point scale roster system to various disciplines of Master’s degree programme.
The members of academic council thanked the State Government for permitting the University to recruit around 100 faculty members. Prof Ashok Kumar Sarial,Vice-Chancellor told that already 31 teachers have been recruited and 23 are likely to be appointed soon as the interview process was completed before lockdown.
Prof Sarial said that many candidates have approached him to extend date for submission of applications for UG and PG programmes and the University will take sympathetic decision for extending the date for filling applications as cyber cafes were closed and students in remote areas were not able to reach common service centers. Moreover, recently lockdown has been extended in neighboring state making it difficult for students to apply.

Vice-Chancellor Prof A.K.Sarial expresses grief on the demise of eminent farm scientist Prof V.L.Chopra
Palampur 19 April. Prof Ashok Kumar Sarial, Vice-Chancellor, CSK Himachal Pradesh Agriculture University has expressed grief on the demise of Padma Bhushan Prof V.L.Chopra, who passed away yesterday.
Prof Sarial said that Prof V.L.Chopra was an eminent farm scientist known for his pioneer work in the field of biotechnology and genetics. He contributed for enhancing wheat production in India. He will be remembered for rendering valuable services to the nation as Director-General, Indian Council of Agricultural Research; Member, Planning Commission of India; Chancellor, Central University of Kerala and Chancellor, Central Agricultural University, Imphal and fellow of several science academies such as Indian Academy of Sciences, Indian National Science Academy, National Academy of Agricultural Sciences, etc.
The Vice-Chancellor said that Prof Chopra's love for hills was known to all as he made Palampur his second home. The university community will remember him for his special affection with the university as he used to come off and on to the campus and interact with scientists.

CSKHPAU adopts several preventive measures to contain the spread of COVID-19
Palampur 21 March. CSK Himachal Pradesh Agriculture University has adopted several preventive measures to contain the spread of COVID 19.
All the Statutory Officers have been asked to ensure the minimum bare staff to run the office from 23 March to 28 March. They will include officials who are residing in close proximity to their office or the staff who commutes to work in their own vehicles. They statutory officers will allow the identified remaining staff to work from home. The staff coming through public transport has been exempted to attend their duties during this period. The officials who are working from home or leave will have to be available on telephone and electronic means of communication at all times. They should have to attend the office, if called for any urgent work.
The Senior Medical Officer has been directed to install thermal scanners at Gate No. 1 alongwith trained staff. It has been made mandatory for all offices of the University to place hand sanitizers on the entry of all University buildings and gates. The employees having any flu-like symptoms have been advised to take proper treatment and have been exempted from attending the offices. The entry of visitors in the office complex has been restricted during this period. All staff members have been directed to avoid non-essential official travel. All the officials have been advised to take care of their health and look out for respiratory symptoms, fever etc. They can leave the workplace immediately after informing to their respective controlling officer.
All the University gates except gate No. 1 have been closed with immediate effect till further orders and the entry of all the employees and residents in the University complex will be from gate No. 1 after proper checking of their Identity. All the staff and the students will observe 'Janta Curfew' on 22 March from 7.00 AM to 9.00 PM as per appeal of the Hon'ble Prime Minister'. All the employees are being sensitized about the threat of COVID 2019 as per the instructions of the Govt. from time to time.

CSK HPAU postpones exams, to strictly follow Govt. advisory to check the spread of COVID-19
Palampur 19 March. CSK Himachal Pradesh Agriculture University has decided to postpone on-going mid-semester examinations. As per the orders issued today, the Vice-Chancellor has ordered that all examinations of students of the University scheduled to be held henceforth have been postponed till further orders. Oral comprehensive examination and Thesis viva-voce examination of postgraduate students were postponed till further order on 16 March.
The Vice-Chancellor has ordered all concerned in the main campus and out-stations to strictly follow the advisory of Govt.of H.P. to check the spread of COVID-19. Detailed circular includes advisory like proper cleanliness in buildings, advise to staff to proceed on leave and take prescribed treatment if they develop flu-like symptoms, restriction and screening of visitors to various offices, curtailing meetings and official travel, closure of gym, personal hygiene and social distancing by staff, disinfection of commonly touched surfaces, etc. All statutory officers, heads of department, associate directors of research stations, programme coordinators, etc have been asked to take immediate action in their respective offices so that advisory is followed in letter and spirit by all the persons working under their control.

CSK H.P.Agriculture University to reserve seats for single Girl child
Palampur 18 March. CSK Himachal Pradesh Agriculture University has decided to reserve one seat in each undergraduate programme of the University for Admission of 'Single Girl Child'. According to Prof Ashok Kumar , Vice-Chancellor, the University has approved to reserve one seat each in all undergraduate programmes of the four constituent colleges. However, this the seat will be reserved to 'single girl child' belonging to Himachal Pradesh within the intake capacity under over and above category seats from the academic session beginning this year i.e. 2020-21.The Vice-Chancellor said that the university was running six undergraduate programmes in its four constituent colleges and the decision will go a long way in propagating quality professional education among small families having a single girl child.

Palampur 13 March. Prof Ashok Kumar Sarial, Vice-Chancellor, has urged young educated farmers to take advantage of Startup schemes to become successful entrepreneurs.
While chairing a meeting of Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC) of Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Kangra, the Vice-Chancellor detailed about the Govt. of India sponsored 'Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojna Raftaar (RKVY-RAFTAAR)' and Chief Minister's Startup programme. He asked the extension specialists to motivate the trainees to take advantage of 'Him Palam Raftaar Agri-Business incubator' in the University where their scalable and repeatable business models will enable them to become successful entrepreneurs under the guidance of experienced specialists as mentors.
Prof Ashok Kumar Sarial, Vice-Chancellor said that ever increasing unemployment was a challenge for all and the Governments of India and Himachal Pradesh have come out with such Startup schemes to motive the youngsters to start their own business and become successful entrepreneurs. He told that selected incubatees were provided stipend of Rs. Ten thousand per month for pursuing their entrepreneurial aspirations. They were also eligible for pre-seed funding to convert their innovative idea into a prototype and seed funding upto Rs. 25 lakh for the commercialization of their product.
The Vice-Chancellor said that all out efforts were underway to help the farmers in doubling their income. The University had developed twenty farm-based models and shared with the stakeholders to 'Double the Farmers' Income. He exhorted all concerned to work together to increase the income of farm families. Prof Sarial also elaborated the importance and utility of adopting natural farming. He hoped that more number of farmers will come forward to adopt natural farming and providing chemical free hygienic farm produce. He also discussed issues like importance of rearing Pahari cow, farm based avocations like mushroom cultivation, bee-keeping, protected cultivation, crop diversification, etc.
Dr.Y.P.Thakur, Director of Extension Education, informed about the trainings to enhance skill of farmers sponsored by Agricultural Skill Council of India. He asked members to educate the farmers of their areas about new programmes and schemes. He also detailed about new improved crop varieties and technologies developed by the University. Dr.N.K.Badhan, Additional Director of Agriculture, H.P. elaborated about various government schemes of his department.
Dr. Bhupinder Singh Mankotia, Programme Coordinator presented progress report and proposed activities of his KVK. Besides the extension specialists Drs Sanjay Sharma, Neetu Sharma, Deep Kumar, Pardeep Kumar and Rakesh Thakur, Progressive farmer members and other members representing departments of Agriculture, Horticulture, Animal Husbandry, Forestry, banks, etc. also took active part in the deliberations.

Scientific Advisory Committee Meetings at KVKs at Berthin & Bara
Help farmers in doubling their income: Prof. Ashok Kumar Sarial, Vice-Chancellor
Palampur 12 March. Krishi Vigyan Kendras of CSK Himachal Pradesh Agriculture University situated at Berthin (Bilaspur) and Bara (Hamirpur) organized Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC) meetings today. Prof Ashok Kumar Sarial, Vice-Chancellor, chaired both the meeting and addressed the SAC members of both KVKs.
The Vice-Chancellor told that members that it was imperative to double the income of farmers by 2022 as envisaged by the Government. He said that all concerned departments at the district level should work in perfect cohesion to help the farmers enabling them to increase their farm income. The Vice-Chancellor told that the University has developed twenty farm-based models and shared with the stakeholders to ‘Double the Farmers' Income. He informed that some farmers have already proved the efficacy of these models by adopting their need and area-based models.
The Vice-Chancellor exhorted progressive farmers to take lead in educating the farming community about various schemes of the government so that they are benefitted. He said that a massive programme has been initiated to turn Himachal Pradesh into a natural farming state and the university was extending all possible support in this mega effort. He told that wholehearted involvement of the farming community was required for this movement and asked scientists, farm officers and progressive farmers to spread the word among stakeholders. Prof. Ashok Kumar Sarial detailed the research and extension education efforts of the University in natural farming at Palampur and all KVKs. The Vice-Chancellor also spoke on the importance of crop diversification.
Dr.Y.P.Thakur, Director of Extension Education, asked members to educate farmers about a large number of trainings at Palampur and all KVKs so that they were able to enhance their skills and farm income. He said that all district level departments engaged in the welfare of farmers should work in perfect coordination.Dr.Dinesh Kumar Vatsa, Director of Research spoke on the importance of farm mechanization and detailed research activities of the University.
Drs Suman Kumar and Parveen Sharma, Programme Coordinators presented reports of the activities undertaken in the last one year in their respective KVKs and also proposed activities for the next year. Progressive farmers and other members representing departments of Agriculture, Horticulture, Animal Husbandry, Forestry, banks, etc. also took active part in the meetings.

Bucks distributed to Gaddi goat farmers for breed improvement
Goat farming has a bright future in H.P.: Prof A.K.Sarial, Vice-Chancellor,CSKHPAU
Palampur 11 March. Prof. Ashok Kumar Sarial, Vice Chancellor, CSK Himachal Pradesh Agriculture University has underlined the importance of goat farming in Himachal Pradesh.
While interacting with goat farmers after distributing 21 superior Gaddi breeding bucks to 21 different progressive goat farmers of the State, the Vice-Chancellor said that owing to vast high altitude pastures, goat farming has a bright future in Himachal Pradesh. He said that it can help in doubling the farmers' income.
Prof Sarial said that bucks were provided to the farmers with the objectives to bring about overall breed improvement of the existing Gaddi goats. He told that the scientists from the Department of Animal Genetics and Breeding, Dr.G.C.Negi College of Veterinary & Animal Sciences (COVAS) have raised the bucks after two stages of selection and scientific management. They are free from any disease which can be transmitted to the progeny through the bucks like brucellosis which results in abortions and ultimately heavy economic losses to the farmers. He advised them to fully utilize the potential of these breeding bucks being provided to them, because superior breeding buck will pass on desired productivity traits in the progeny and ultimately it will improve the income of the farmers. He also congratulated the project team for their hard work under migratory field conditions for the benefit of tribal people.
Dr Y.P. Thakur, Director Extension Education, highlighted the role of breeding bucks for improving the overall productivity of the flock. Dr.Mandeep Sharma, Dean COVAS emphasized the utility of the project to the farmers.
Dr. P.K. Dogra, Principal Investigator of the project, told that the ongoing All India Co-ordinated Research Project on Goat Improvement was being implemented under the umbrella of Central Institute for Research on Goats located at Makhdoom, Mathura. During the last five years, 129 such superior breeding bucks had been provided to the farmers. These were performing very well in the field. He told that about 1000 pure Gaddi goats were being monitored under the project. The project was being implemented under migratory field conditions by providing strategic breeding, feeding and health control inputs.

13 vegetables varieties and 8 production technologies developed by CSKHPAU approved for cultivation in H.P.: Vice-Chancellor Prof A. K.Sarial
Palampur 2 March. Thirteen varieties and eight production technologies of vegetables developed by CSK H.P. Agriculture University have been approved for cultivation in Himachal Pradesh. This was disclosed by Prof. Ashok Kumar Sarial, Vice-Chancellor, here today.
The Vice-Chancellor said that 13 varieties of different vegetables have been approved for inclusion in the package of practices and cultivation in the state. These include two garden pea varieties Him Palam Matar-1 and Him Palam Matar-2, two edible pod pea varieties Him Palam Meethi Phali-1 and Him Palam Meethi Phali-2, two in Chilli Him Palam Mirch-1 and Him Palam Mirch-2, two of Parthenocarpic cucumber Him Palam Kheera-1 and Him Palam Kheera-2, one variety each of tomato Him Palam Tomato Hybrid-2, cherry tomato Him Palam Cherry tomato-1, Cabbage Him Palam Cabbage Hybrid-1, Onion Him Palam Shweta and Radish Him Palam Mooli-1.
Prof Sarial said that eight production technologies have also been approved for inclusion in the package of practices and adoption for cultivation in the state. These include soil-less media for healthy vegetable nursery production in plug- trays, plant spacing in tomato and parthenocarpic cucumber under protected environment, growing cucurbits seedlings in waste disposable/earthen cups in standardized potting material, enhancing shelf life of Kharif onion bulbs, rootstocks for bacterial wilt and nematode resistance in tomato and bell pepper, spacing, training and fertigation for capsicum under protected conditions, propagation of tomato through stem cuttings under protected conditions and pomato- two in one crop for polyhouse cultivation.
Prof. Ashok Kumar Sarial, Vice-Chancellor said that Himachal Pradesh was known for off-season vegetable cultivation and the newly developed varieties by the university will enhance the production of vegetables and increasing the income of farmers and will also help in crop diversification. He congratulated the head Deptt of Vegetable Science and Floriculture Dr. Akhilesh Sharma and his team for their achievements.

Training on the Job Role of Dairy Farmer at COVAS
Vice-Chancellor Prof Ashok Kumar Sarial emphasizes the significance of scientific trainings in developing entrepreneurship among farmers
Palampur 25 February. Prof. Ashok Kumar Sarial, Vice-Chancellor, inaugurated a month long training program on the job role "Dairy farmer-Entrepreneur" at Dr. G.C. Negi College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (COVAS), CSK Himachal Pradesh Agriculture University, here today.
While addressing trainees and scientists, the Vice-Chancellor said that to be successful in any avocation, practical knowledge of scientific techniques and skills were must in this era. He told that Governments of India and Himachal Pradesh were helping farmers by various programmes including sponsoring professional trainings. He asked the farmers to learn every aspect of dairy farming carefully as their skills will be evaluated by an independent agency after a month long training and successful trainees will be awarded certificates useful for obtaining bank loans, etc. The Vice-Chancellor also appreciated the ladies and young qualified farmers from faraway places for voluntarily taking part in the training and expressed the hope that such trainees will also extend newly acquired skills among other villagers of their areas. Prof Ashok Kumar Sarial asked the trainees to be in touch with university scientists and specialists for further guidance and solving their farm related problems. He appreciated the university scientists for helping in getting 'Himachali Pahari' cattle registered.
Dr Mandeep Sharma, Dean, COVAS, as guest of honour asked the farmers to learn the skills of dairy farming to be a successful entrepreneur as there was huge demand of milk in the State. He said that the governments were making massive efforts to double the income of farmers and such trainings could help to achieve this. He also elaborated on the importance of rearing 'Himachali Pahari' cattle.
Dr. Yash Pal Thakur, Director of Extension Education, told that sixteen trainings on farm based avocations, including this one, have been sponsored by the Agricultural Skill Council of India. He also elaborated on the importance of dairy farming which has been an important component of integrated farming since ages.
Dr A.K.Panda, Head, Department of Veterinary & Animal Husbandry Extension Education, Dr. Manoj Sharma, Course Director and Dr. Devesh Thakur, Co-course Director informed that among twenty trainees, most were qualified persons including engineers and ex-servicemen. First indigenous cattle breed of H.P. registered at NBAGR: Prof. A.K. Sarial, Vice-Chancellor
Palampur 22 February. Finally, Himachal Pradesh has its very first officially recognized indigenous cattle breed, "Himachali Pahari" thanks to the scientific work by animal breeders from CSK Himachal Pradesh Agriculture University.
Prof Ashok Kumar Sarial, Vice-Chancellor informed that the Breed Registration Committee of National Bureau of Animal Genetic Resources (NBAGR), Karnal has approved and registered "Himachali Pahari" as very first indigenous cattle breed of the State. He told that the veterinary scientists of his university lead by Dr.Y.P.Thakur, Director of Extension Education, who is also Professor of Animal Genetics and Breeding has done all the scientific research work to get this breed with unique features, registered with the NBAGR, the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) nodal agency for registration of newly identified germplasms of livestock and poultry of the country.
The Vice-Chancellor told that among the seven cattle breeds recently registered, "Himachali Pahari" with an approximate population of 8,00,000 was primarily distributed in mid-hills to high hills region of the State like Kullu, Chamba, Mandi, Kangra, Sirmour, Kinnaur and Lahaul-Spiti districts and adapted to mountain topography, extremely cold climate and fodder scarcity. It is small to medium in size animal primarily black and blackish-brown in colour with compact cylindrical body, short legs, medium hump, horizontally placed ears and comparatively long tail. Horns are medium in size and are mainly curved in the lateral and upward direction. It is well suited to the mountainous livestock production system as a source of milk, draught and manure. Adult weight varies from 200 to 280 Kg in males and 140 to 230 in females. Its height varies from 90 to 120 cms. Daily milk yield ranges from 1 to 3 Liters and lactation milk yield from 350 to 650 Liters.
The Vice-Chancellor expected that with the registration of this breed, research and conservation work will be expedited as there will be a regular flow of funds from the funding agencies. "Since it has been registered as a distinct indigenous breed of Himachal Pradesh, so the livestock keepers will have exclusive rights on its ownership. They will feel encouraged to rear it as it is sustainable for Natural Farming due to its unique characteristics, especially its adaptability and A2 milk quality with high contents of amino acids and resistance to dozens of diseases" added Prof Sarial.
Prof Sarial said that a buffalo breed 'Gojri' reared in Kangra, Chamba and some parts of Punjab by migratory Gujjars has also been registered by NBAGR, Karnal. Intellectual Property Right in India excludes Patentability of plants and animals. It provides an alternative sui generis system called Registration of Plants and Animal Genetic Stock.

Vice-Chancellor Prof A.K.Sarial inaugurates workshop on 'Academic Management System Software'
Palampur 7 February. Prof Ashok Kumar Sarial, Vice-Chancellor, inaugurated a two days workshop on 'Academic Management System Software' at CSK Himachal Pradesh Agriculture University, here today.
While addressing the Deans, faculty and students, the Vice-Chancellor said that this workshop was important to educate all concerned about Academic Management System(AMS) and Project Information Management System (PIMS) which would be helpful in various academic, research, extension education, financial and administrative activities in the University. He told that implementation of this s system will enhance the efficiency and transparency. Prof Sarial said that the university clients namely students and farmers will also be benefitted through the artificial intelligence based Apps for crop production technology.
Prof Sarial mentioned that virtual classrooms will be a reality in the University in near future for providing quality education to the students.
Guest of honour Dr.R.C. Goyal, IT Consultant, National Agricultural Higher Education Project( NAHEP) detailed about master data requirements and operational architecture of AMS. He also informed about features and functioning of PIMS and artificial intelligence based mobile app for disease and pest management. Other experts educated the participants about online reporting system, data validation and entry, problem solving, etc.
Dr.R.K.Agnihotri, Dean, Post Graduate Studies and Dr.D.K.Vatsa, Director of Research underlined the importance of AMS and PIMS.
Dr.Ranbir Singh Rana, Principal Investigator, NAHEP and Shri Kapil Sharma, workshop coordinator, informed that this system tracks the students activities right from the registration to the completion of academic programmes.

Workshop on ‘Development of Soft Skills for Entrepreneurship among Agri–graduates' at CSKHPAU
Palampur 6 February. A workshop on 'Development of Soft Skills for Entrepreneurship among Agri-graduates' was organized at CSK Himachal Pradesh Agriculture University, here today.
Prof Ashok Kumar Sarial, Vice-Chancellor, while addressing the students from the constituent colleges of the University, underlined the need to equip the graduates with requisite knowledge and skills to become successful entrepreneurs. The Vice-Chancellor said that soft skills of students should be honed to make them better communicators to face interviews, develop spirit of team work and engrain leadership qualities in them. Such qualities help in becoming successful entrepreneur. Prof Sarial also advised to enhance technical knowledge and skill of farm graduates so that they may think and develop new ideas of entrepreneurship to become job providers. He said that the present agriculture can be reinvented with innovative ways to address new challenges and provide employment to a large number of people.
Prof Sarial also elaborated about Govt. of India and Govt of Himachal Pradesh schemes to develop entrepreneurship among youth and asked the students to avail benefits of Agri business incubators and such other schemes. He said that in this era of competitiveness students need to improve their Knowledge, Skills and Attitude and such workshops can help them a lot.
Director of Research Dr.D.K. Vatsa, Dean College of Agriculture Dr.Ashwani Basandrai, Dean College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences Dr Mandeep Sharma, Professor Emeritus Drs J. S. Guleria, besides experts from seed companies, banks and successful agri- graduates also addressed the students. Drs. N. K. Sankhyan and Anil Kumar, workshop coordinators informed that the workshop was organised in collaboration with National Academy of Agricultural Research and Management, Hyderabad under National Higher Education Project.
Around 100 students from agriculture, veterinary, food technology and home science were apprised about central and state startup schemes, innovations and startup- experiences and challenges, entrepreneurship and economic perspective, start-up for young entrepreneurs, etc and their questions about such topics were answered by the experts.

Republic Day celebrated enthusiastically at CSKHPAU

The Vice-Chancellor elaborated about the tremendous progress of the nation due to the strenuous efforts of countrymen. Prof Ashok Kumar Sarial also enumerated some recent achievements of the University in the areas of academics, research and extension education. The Vice-Chancellor said that it was a challenge to maintain and improve 11th rank among all farm universities of the country for this young and small University but expressed the hope that collective efforts will yield positive results. Palampur 10 January. CSK HP Agriculture University has cautioned the general public against fake recruitment scam in the name of the university by some mischievous elements. It has come to the notice of administration that some fake appointment letters have been issued for the post of 'clerk' to some gullible people in Sirmaur district. The University has advised such affected persons to approach the police so that culprits are brought to book.It has been clarified that all university recruitments are done by adopting proper procedures by the Registrar office and no individual or agency has been authorized for the recruitment of staff.

Vice-Chancellor Prof Ashok Kumar Sarial holds Press Conference
CSKHPAU to recruit 90 Junior Office Assistants and 40 security staff: Vice-Chancellor Prof A.K.Sarial
Palampur 3 January. CSK HP Agriculture University has decided to recruit 90 Junior Office Assistants and 40 security staff. This was disclosed by Prof Ashok Kumar Sarial, Vice-Chancellor, during a press conference, here today.
The Vice-Chancellor informed that a decision has been taken by the Board of Management of the University to recruit 90 junior office assistants after taking State Government's permission. Thirty-five other posts of non-teaching employees like field assistants, stenographers, etc will also be filled up. The process to recruit 26 posts of lab attendants, hostel attendants, etc. has been almost completed.
To manage the security of campus, 40 security personnel will be recruited through Ex-servicemen Corporation, Hamirpur. He told that efforts have been made to strengthen working of eight Krishi Vigyan Kendras of the University and interviews were held last month to fill up 14 positions of subject matter specialists. After his joining as Vice-Chancellor in August 2016, 47 positions of teachers and non-teachers have been filled- up besides resolving the issues of 46 co-terminus staff members.
Prof Sarial told that visibility and credibility of the University has increased as many departments from Govt. of India, Govt. of Gujarat, Govt. of M.P., Govt. of J&K and reputed Public and Private sector institutions have come forward for signing MoUs for the training of their staff and farmers.138 research projects worth Rs. 6750 lakh are in operation which is highest number and amount in the last four years. Such projects, besides helping to solve the farm problems and researchable issues, help in providing employment to qualified students and others. He also elaborated about the lead role of his University in natural farming which has drawn the attention of many state governments and institutions from all over the country.
The Vice-Chancellor also answered several questions by the reporters from print and electronic media. Dr.Hirday Paul Singh, Joint Director (Information & Public Relations) was present in the press conference.

New Year Address of the Vice-Chancellor
CSKHPAU to provide consultancy services and conduct contract research: Vice-Chancellor Prof A.K.Sarial
Palampur 1 January. Prof Ashok Kumar Sarial, Vice Chancellor, CSK Himachal Pradesh Agriculture University, has urged the staff to maintain hard-earned distinction and serve the farming community with dedication. He was addressing the scientists, non-teaching employees and students on the occasion of New Year, here today.
The Vice-Chancellor announced that 'AgrInnovate Setup' has been approved to provide consultancy services, contract research, contract training programmes and contract services. It will act as an effective interface between the University and the stakeholders of the agricultural sector like farmers; public and private sector firms; research and development organizations etc. for securing, sustaining and promoting global agricultural development. He told that among all the farm varsities in the country, his university has been ranked at 11th position by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research.
Prof Sarial apprised the staff and students about the major achievements in academics, research and extension education. He told that a good number of passed out students were getting jobs or pursuing higher education with scholarships. More than fifty students cleared national level competitive examinations like national eligibility test (NET), national talent scholarship (NTS), JRF, SRF, etc this year and added that the ever-increasing number of applicants for university academic programmes was an indicator of excellence in education which would be maintained. He told that for the first time in University, 14 girl cadets got NCC 'C' certificate and 36 cadets passed NCC 'C' certificate with 'A' grade,
Prof A.K.Sarial informed that the University has recommended four improved varieties like Trombay Him Palam Mustard-172, Him Palam Rye Grass-1, Him Palam Jau -2 besides four vegetable crop varieties have been notified at all India level. In the year 2019, 33 research projects worth Rs. 3248 lakh were sanctioned by various funding agencies and 138 research projects worth Rs. 6741 lakh were in operation. He informed that some prestigious projects sanctioned like 'Protected Agriculture and Natural Farming project' worth Rs. 22.66 crore; establishment of 'Shiitake Cultivation and Training centre' worth Rs. 5.00 crore 'Him Palam Raftar Agri-Business Incubator' worth Rs. 233 lakh; 'H.P.Chief Minister's Startup Scheme' worth Rs. 40 lakh, etc. would directly benefit the farmers, students and other stakeholders.
The University organised around 560 training programmes benefiting more than 17,000 farmers. The University has signed MoUs with Bhaba Atomic Research Centre, International Centre for Agricultural Research in Dry Areas, Agricultural Skill Council of India, Union Ministry of Agriculture, NABARD, SJVN, National Higher Education Research Project, etc. to propel research and extension activities.
Prof A.K.Sarial also elaborated about the creation of new infrastructure like hostels and told that 12 teachers were recruited besides promoting 25 teachers and 54 non-teaching employees. Benefits like additional increment to 157 class four employees were also provided. He told that the government has given approval to fill-up several posts of teachers and non-teachers and the process was underway to recruit the staff.
The Vice-Chancellor profusely expressed his gratitude to the State Government for liberal financial support to the University to run the affairs smoothly. He expressed satisfaction that the University continued its glorious tradition of ragging and smoke-free serene campus. Prof Ashok Kumar Sarial congratulated and thanked all staff members for their performance and helping him to bring credit to the institution.
Later, the Vice-Chancellor organised a tea party to around 85 teaching and non-teaching staff members whose performance was ranked outstanding in 2019 and the scientists who bagged research projects worth Rs. fifty lakh or more amount. He said that good workers were an inspiration to others and valuable asset of the University All statutory officers and representatives of all teacher and non-teaching employees unions were also present on the occasion.
