VERU training at CSKHPAU
Palampur 30 December. A four days certification program by the Veterinary Emergency Response Unit concluded at CSK H.P.Agriculture University today.
While addressing trainees and scientists, Chief Guest Dr D.K.Vatsa, Vice Chancellor appreciated Dr G.C. Negi College of Veterinary & Animal Sciences for organising such trainings at regular intervals.He said that proactive problem-solving approach resolves many issues. He said that it is encouraging that 47 aspiring veterinarians have got extensive expertise in disaster management, animal rescue, and emergency care under the guidance of multidisciplinary experts.
Dr Ravinder Kumar, Dean told that practical demonstrations were given to trainees ensuring holistic learning environment. Dr Subhash Verma, coordinator, provided a detailed overview of the program's impact.
Drs. Ankur Sharma, Rishika Vij and Ankaj Thakur also expressed their views.

National Farmers Day at CSKHPAU:
Vice Chancellor Dr.D.K.Vatsa asks farmers to adopt smart agriculture for sustainable food security
Palampur 23 December. Rashtriya Kisan Divas was celebrated by scientist farmer interaction at Chaudhary Sarwan Kumar H.P.Agriculture University, here today. Chief Guest Dr. D.K. Vatsa, Vice Chancellor in his inaugural address, emphasized the need to engage new generation in farming by adopting smart agriculture. He said that it is crucial to maintain and sustain food security of the nation by adopting modern farm technologies. Dr Vatsa appreciated the important role of ladies in farming in Himachal Pradesh. He said that they were looking after several duties and asked them to motivate their children to study agriculture.
"We cannot survive without food so agriculture is the most important and very first profession to be adopted", emphasized the Vice Chancellor.He asked all concerned to make people aware about new technologies like use of artificial intelligence, drones, remote controlled power tillers and other machines, etc in modern agriculture for increasing crop production and food security. The Vice Chancellor also discussed increasing popularity of vertical and rooftop farming, hydroponics, etc. He said that our state is rich in agro biodiversity and University efforts in getting Geographical Indicators so that farmers are benefited. He also advised all to increase use of millets in diet. He also discussed impact of climate change on agriculture and need of maximizing use of renewable energy resources, etc. He expressed the hope that all will join hands for the progress of our state.

Dr Naveen Kumar, Director Extension Education, elaborated the importance of this day. He told that it was started to commemorate the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Chaudhary Charan Singh as he was called mesiah of farmers. The former Prime Minister had initiated several welfare programmes for the farmers. Dr Naveen Kumar told that 'Smart farming for sustainable food security' is the theme of this day.
He also detailed new farm technologies to enhance farm production. Dr Rajesh Uppal, Associate Director and Dr Lav Bhushan also addressed the farmers. Besides Drs Suman Kumar, Hirday Paul Singh and Sanjiv Parmer, around one hundred farmers from the surrounding villages participated in the program.

Vice Chancellor Dr.D.K.Vatsa inaugurates National Mathematics Day at CSKHPAU
Palampur 22 December. National Mathematics Day was celebrated at the College of Basic Sciences, Chaudhary Sarwan Kumar H.P.Agriculture University, here today.
Chief Guest Dr. D.K. Vatsa, Vice Chancellor CSK Himachal Pradesh Agriculture University, in his inaugural address, highlighted the importance of mathematics and its significant role in numerous scientific discoveries. He said that mathematics is backbone of science and technology for sustainable development. He also remembered great mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan, his immense contributions and asked students to imbibe his virtues to become proficient in their careers. He asked students to come out from their comfort zones and contribute in state and national development.Dr Vatsa appreciated the Science Club of the college for organising activities aimed at promoting mathematical awareness and appreciation. The Vice Chancellor also released a booklet authored by Drs Sharda Singh and Abhishek Guleria.
Dr Sharda Singh, Dean, College of Basic Sciences told that the students participated in declamation and rangoli competitions. A motivational movie was also screened to mark the day.
Dr. Sunil Kumar Sharma from Govt. College Nadaun, delivered a keynote address. Drs. Rishi Mahajan and Dr. Abhishek Guleria acknowledged the support of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research higher education project and H.P.Council for Science , Technology and Environment (HIMCOSTE) in organising the event. All the staff members and students were present during the inaugural ceremony.

Training on Seabuckhtorn at Kukumseri
Dr.D.K.Vatsa, Vice-Chancellor appreciates hard working farmers of Lahaul
Chaudhary Sarwan Kumar Himachal Pradesh Agriculture University organised a training on Seabuckthorn at its Regional Research Station, Kukumseri in Lahaul today. Dr D.K.Vatsa, Vice-Chancellor distributed farm implements including power sprayers, bush cutters, etc. to representatives of all 32 Panchayats of Lahaul valley. While addressing around 300 farmers and farm ladies, he asked farmers to get complete scientific information about seabuckthorn from the University Research Station. He asked scientists to develop and make farmers aware about the farm tools and implements useful in harvesting and processing of seabuckhtorn. He discussed challenges and opportunities due to climate change, management of natural resources, utilization of solar energy, farm mechanisation, use of digital technology in farming, etc. He appreciated the hard working farmers of tribal areas who produce high value cash crops despite inclement weather and tough terrain. They are growing exotic vegetables which have vast potential in enhancing their farm income. The Vice-Chancellor also visited exhibition on seabuckthorn. Dr S.K.Upadhyay, Director of Research, asked farmers to adopt scientific farming of seabuckthorn. He told that farm implements have been provided under Tribal Sub plan of Indian Council of Agricultural Research. Dr.Pankaj Chopra, Scientist Incharge, detailed activities of the regional research station. Dr.R.K.Rana,Principal Investigator underlined the importance, medicinal value, processing and value addition of seabuckhtorn. Head of departments Drs Narender Sankhyan and Anup Katoch and other scientists like Drs Pawan Kumar Sharma, Parveen Kumar, Ashita Bisht, Radhika Negi and Shabnam Katoch were also present on the occasion.

CSKHPAU gets Best Performance Excellence Award for its Farmer FIRST Program
Palampur 1 December. 'Farmer FIRST Centre' of Chaudhary Sarwan Kumar Himachal Pradesh Agriculture University has been awarded 'Best Performance Excellence Award' by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research. Disclosing this here today, Dr D.K.Vatsa, Vice-Chancellor told that during the 'National Review Workshop of the Farmer FIRST Programme', which concluded yesterday, the award to the university was presented for its best performance amongst all the centres in Zone I comprising the States of H.P., J&K, Punjab and Uttrakhand.
He told that the award-winning University centre has been instrumental in implementing innovative strategies and sustainable agricultural practices, making a substantial impact on the livelihoods of farmers of Dharer Panchayat in the Baijnath block of Kangra district. The 'Farmer FIRST Programme' is a crucial initiative aimed at empowering farmers through knowledge exchange, innovative practices, and sustainable agricultural interventions.
The Vice Chancellor appreciated Dr.Desh Raj Chaudhary, Principal Investigator and his team of scientists comprising Drs Pawan Kumar Sharma, Luv Bhushan, S.S.Rana,Parvesh Kumar, Krisheneder Dinesh, Ankaj Thakur, Anupama Sandal and Rajesh Thakur and training associate Shri Saniv Parmar who have been able to address the needs of farmers and enabling them to enhance their income by effectively implementing the 'Farmer FIRST Programme'.

Farmer First National Workshop at CSKHPAU: Dr U.S.Gautam, DDG, ICAR exhorts scientists to develop strategy for effective technology transfer
Palampur 28 November. Dr U.S.Gautam, Deputy Director General, Indian Council of Agricultural Research, inaugurated a three days National Review Workshop on Farmer First Program at Chaudhary Sarwan Kumar Himachal Pradesh Agriculture University, here today. While addressing around 150 delegates from all over the country, the Chief Guest, exhorted the scientists to develop effective strategy to extend useful farm technology to the farmers fields to raise their socio economic status. Enriching knowledge and adoption technology by the farmers is an important target of farmers first program. He said that action plans should be reoriented as per the need of farmers to improve their farm income. He discussed integrating millets in the cropping systems. Dr Gautam said that small farmers should be paid special attention. He also talked about getting benefits from carbon credits, maximizing utility of drone services and improving custom hiring services. He asked scientists to develop strategy for upscaling and improving technology transfer as highly educated professionals are also entering farming sector.
The Chief Guest also released some technical publications.
In his presidential address, Dr D.K. Vatsa, Vice Chancellor said that this successful project has proved its utility beyond production and productivity as all adopted farmers have been able to enhance their income by adopting new farm technology under the guidance of scientists. He said that farming is of utmost importance as food is a very basic requirement for all. This thought should be inculcated among children to make them aware about pursuing a career in agriculture. He said that all should understand their responsibility towards farmers who feed the nation. He discussed issues like the need of sustainable agriculture in decreasing farm land with new technology, exploiting rich agro biodiversity in the State, etc. He said farm mechanisation is the need of the hour. Dr. Vatsa suggested providing new technology to farmers settled in far flung and remote areas.
Guest of honour Dr R. R.Burman, Assistant Director General,ICAR, told that farmers participatory research in 52 centres have remained useful in the last six years. Locally useful technology has been generated and income of farmer clusters have been enhanced to the tune of double or triple in the adopted villages.
Dr Parvender Sheoran, Director, Agricultural Technology Application Research Institute, Ludhiana informed that members of the project management committee comprising former Vice Chancellors, directors and senior scientists, will be giving practical and valuable suggestions to improve the effectiveness of Farmer First project.
Dr Naveen Kumar, Director Extension Education of the host University detailed achievements of this project in the University adopted villages.
Dr Desh Raj Chaudhary, Principal Investigator of the project told that fifteen progressive farmers from seven adopted villages by the host University and some retired extension scientists will also be taking part in the deliberations. Smt Pinki Devi, Pradhan, Dharer Panchayat, Baijnath, shared experience of her Panchayat. An exhibition of farmers' farm products was also installed on the occasion.

To commemorate NCC day, a blood donation camp was organised at CSK Himachal Pradesh Agriculture University today. 38 boys and 31 girl NCC cadets from the University and Shaheed Captain Vikram Batra Govt College donated 42 units blood. Dr D.K Vatsa, Vice Chancellor appreciated the NCC cadets for coming forward voluntarily to help the needy patients. Eight CSKHPAU scholars leave for advanced training at IRRI, Philippines
Palampur 24 November. Eight Ph.D. scholars of Chaudhary Sarwan Kumar Himachal Pradesh Agriculture University have been selected for attending an International advanced trainings program on crop modeling and climate change mitigation, molecular breeding, genome editing and seed production techniques.
Disclosing this Dr.D.K.Vatsa, Vice-Chancellor said that the University scholars will get one month training at the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), Philippines. This opportunity is part of the Centre for Advanced Agricultural Science and Technology under the National Agricultural Higher Education project by Indian Council of Agricultural Research. So far, 36 students have got international exposure and trainings in the recent past.
Before their departure for Philippines, the students met the Vice-Chancellor, who exhorted all to learn new techniques in different domains and apply these technologies to augment the quality research in agriculture and bring out high impact research publications. He expressed the hope that the training will open new vistas to manage agricultural inputs and resources under climatic uncertainties and the availability of resources.
The Ph.D. scholars Bharat Bhushan Rana,Mridula, Shabnam Kumari, Sachin from the Department of Agronomy and Manoj Kumar Saini, Shivani Bhatia and Prikshit from the Department of Genetics & Plant Breeding and Ankit Kumar from the Department of Vegetable Science and Floriculture thanked the University for providing them an opportunity for the International training.
Dr. Naveen Kumar, Director of Extension Education was also present during the occasion.

Training on Small Animal cardiology concludes at CSKHPAU
Palampur 23 November.A two days training on 'Small Animal Echocardiography and Electrocardiography' concluded at Dr G.C.Negi College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Chaudhary Sarwan Kumar Himachal Pradesh Agriculture University, here today.
While addressing 23 trainees, other scientists and PG scholars, Chief Guest Dr. D. K. Vatsa, Vice Chancellor said that it was good that the training focused on improving the clinical diagnostic skills of veterinary professionals and gave them hands-on exposure to ultrasonographic examination techniques to evaluate structure and function of heart. He said that such technical trainings are important to sharpen the professional skills of experts and provide them an opportunity for a wider professional interaction.He said that animals are an integral part of human life playing an important role in our day to day life. It is important to provide quality treatment and take good care of animals with new technology by experts.The Vice Chancellor also advised trainees to share newly acquired skills and knowledge with co professionals.He also awarded certificates to the participants. He appreciated the Department of Veterinary Surgery and Radiology for organising the training.The Vice Chancellor also appreciated University alumnus Dr Manish Kumar from Faridabad for providing infusion pumps to Dr G.C.Negi College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences.
Dr Adarsh Kumar, Course Director, told that reputed professionals and the rising veterinary private practitioners of the country participated in the training. He thanked 'Small Animal Veterinary Association ' New Delhi for collaborating with the University for this training. Prof. S.P. Tyagi,organising chairman informed that trainees from different states participated in the training.He told that every participant was given ample opportunity to practice the techniques on clinical patients under the supervision of scientists and experts.

He said that positive attitude determines ones resolve to move ahead in life. Dr.Vatsa said introspection and exactly knowing one's personality also helps to develop various skills. Conscious and regular efforts are needed to develop a good and beautiful personality.He also discussed the importance of deciding the goal of life, hard work, failure and success in life, self talk, self care, making healthy choices, critical thinking, etc. He told that the University is providing excellent technical skills to all students .He advised leaving comfort zones to achieve greater heights in career and life. Top agrometeorologists meet at CSKHPAU
Dr S.K.Chaudhari, DDG, ICAR inaugurates three days Meeting
Palampur 20 November.Dr.S.K.Chaudhari, Deputy Director General, Indian Council of Agricultural Research inaugurated three days Working Group Meeting of All India Coordinated Research Project on Agrometeorology and Annual Review Meeting of National Innovations on Climate Resilient Agriculture at CSK Himachal Pradesh Agriculture University, here today.
While addressing around 100 farm scientists from 20 agricultural universities, Chief Guest Dr.S.K.Chaudhari said that authenticity of agro advisories has increased with new tools and techniques.The agrometeorologists have done good work.The crop productions have increased due to proper planning and investment by the government.Dr Chaudhari said that applications of agrometeorology have multiplied with proper convergence.He also discussed flash flood conditions, fragile Himalayan ecology and advised reaching maximum farmers with proper weather predictions and agro met advisories at block level with proper framework.
He said that agro met products by private players should also be welcomed by inviting and interacting with them.The Deputy Director General hoped that interaction of young scientists with top agrometeorologists will be fruitful and advised having robust forecast with long-term vision.
In his presidential remarks, Dr D.K.Vatsa, Vice Chancellor said that agrometeorology has become a buzz word in recent times due to climate change and natural disasters.The scientists associated with projects have a crucial role to play helping the farming community to face the challenges and impacts of climate change and natural disasters.He also discussed importance of weather forecast with new technology, impacts of development on farming, using renewable energy resources,etc and urged the scientists to focus on the recent issues arising due to climate change.
Dr Rajbir Singh, Assistant Director General,ICAR, spoke on the impacts of climate change on agriculture, weather extremes, positive and negative impacts of climate change, critical weather impacting the crop production and productivity.
Dr V.K. Singh, Director, Central Research Institute for Dryland Agriculture, Hyderabad detailed research activities of his institute.
Project Coordinator Dr. Santanu Kumar Bal informed about major project achievements.Dr S. K.Upadhyay, Director of Research and Principal Investigator Dr. M. Prabhakar also expressed their views.
The Chief Guest also released some technical publications.Organising secretary Dr. Sandeep Manuja told that the twin meetings have been jointly organised by the host University and Central Research Institute for Dryland Agriculture, Hyderabad.

Make people aware about BIS Standards: Dr D.K.Vatsa, Vice Chancellor
Palampur 3 November. A national seminar on Role of Standardization in Agriculture Ecosystem was organised at Chaudhary Sarwan Kumar Himachal Pradesh Agriculture University, here today.
In his inaugural address, Chief Guest Dr D.K.Vatsa, Vice Chancellor said that nobody can survive without agriculture as food is required for all. Farming should be done with high quality and for it, standards are required right from producing food to processing it. He said that all concerned should have proper knowledge about standards in agriculture. One has to work hard to maintain and improve standards .
He told that the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has developed Indian Standards of different products and consumables for the clients and general masses. It is important to make clients aware about the ISI marked farm machinery, implements, drip irrigation systems, fertilizers, pesticides, processed food, packing and storage, green houses, etc.
The Vice Chancellor said that ISI marked products are trustworthy, durable and useful for agri-entrepreneurs. He discussed standards for several day to day use items, products etc and expressed concern that consumers and general masses are not much aware about such standards. There is a need to create mass awareness about it.
Dr D.K.Vatsa also discussed natural disasters and underlined the need of developing and strictly following standards for roads, infrastructure , vehicles, etc to make safety our priority. He said all should endeavour to control environment pollution, save nature, follow rules and regulations for the welfare of coming generations. The Vice Chancellor said that time has come to use renewal energy and electric vehicles. He appreciated the Bureau of Indian Standards for joining hands with the Department of Agricultural Engineering of host University for organising the seminar.
Mr.Debasish Mahalik, Scientist, Bureau of Indian Standards spoke about Standardization in the food and agriculture sector. He also detailed Indian Standards on agricultural systems and management.
Prof Manjeet Singh from Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana; Dr Surendra Singh, Technical Advisor, Agriculture Machinery Manufacturers Association, Mr Chandreshekhar Deshmukh,Manager, John Deere, Mr Pradeep Kumar and Er Arshdeep Singh also expressed their views on various aspects of quality and standards
Dr Sushant Bhardwaj and Dr Kanika Baghla informed that around 100 engineers, scientists and officers from various Engineering colleges, ITIs, institutes and some progressive farmers and students participated in the seminar.

Foundation Day celebrations at CSKHPAU
"Come out with new innovations to engage the young generation with farming", exhorts Dr D.K.Vatsa, Vice Chancellor
Palampur 1 November. "Think out of the box and come out with new innovations to engage the young generation with farming", advised Dr D.K.Vatsa, Vice-Chancellor during foundation day celebrations of CSK H.P.Agriculture University, here today.
While addressing the University community, the Vice-Chancellor exhorted scientists to face newage challenges like decreasing farm land, pressure to produce more to feed ever increasing population, climate change, etc with modern farm technology. He said that new technology can help revolutionize hill farming by making it more efficient, sustainable and productive. "Through the integration of precision farming techniques, such as GPS-guided tractors and drones, farmers can optimize their resources, reduce waste, and increase crop yields. Use of artificial intelligence, sensors and data analytics enable real-time monitoring of soil conditions, weather patterns, and crop health allowing farmers to make informed decisions", opined Dr Vatsa.
The Vice Chancellor also discussed the need for apt use of early warning systems to minimise the loss of human and animal wealth, farmlands, etc. during natural disasters.
The Vice-Chancellor appreciated the alumni and students for bringing laurels to the institution with their excellent achievements at regular intervals. He asked them to help keeping campus clean and green and always maintain a glorious tradition of ragging and smoke free campus. He emphatically cautioned them against falling in the trap of drug abuse.
He thanked all retired officers and scientists for their contributions by producing quality human resources, good crop varieties and excellent technologies which has enabled the University to make Himachal Pradesh self-sufficient on the food front. He expressed happiness that the State has earned its name for hill agricultural diversification and the farming community has imposed its faith in the University.
The Vice-Chancellor also tanked the State Government, the Indian Council of Agricultural Research, and other funding agencies for their support.
He asked all employees to serve the farming community with renewed enthusiasm, joy and zest.
The Vice Chancellor also honoured some students, scientists and non-teaching employees with certificates for their services.
Dr S.K.Upadhyay, Director of research presented major achievements in academics, research and extension education.

Palampur 17 October. A day-long regional training programme was organised for librarians of farm universities and Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) institutes at Chaudhary Sarwan Kumar Himachal Pradesh Agriculture University, here today.

He said that there is huge repository of online books, quality research journals, thesis and other resources which can be accessed by the readers anywhere in the world.He also emphasized the need to engage new generation with books as youngsters are keen to read intersting, precise and concise information.Dr Vatsa said that all efforts should be made to increase footfall in the libraries by new ideas and innovations.The Vice Chancellor said that researcher should have global perspective to serve the farming community effectively.He also asked scientists to empower the farmers with useful new skills and knowledge by acquiring maximum knowledge by modern means like e-resouces.
Dr.H.K.Tripathi, Librarian from ICAR,detailed significance of online resource CeRa for research. He told that it is the largest consortium in the field of agricultural sciences.

New technology will enhance farm income: Dr D.K.Vatsa, Vice Chancellor, CSKHPAU
Palampur 12 October. Dr D.K.Vatsa, Vice Chancellor inaugurated a day-long business meet and training on 'Recent aspects of Agriculture for the NABARD officers' at CSK H.P. Agriculture University, here today.
The Vice Chancellor underlined the importance of modern farm technology in enhancing income of the farmers. He said that ever increasing population is to be provided quality food so it cannot be neglected. He said it is necessary that new technology reaches farmers' field quickly.
The new generation of farmers should be attracted towards newly developed farm knowledge and technology so that they are engaged to agriculture. The young farmers should be trained to become successful farm entrepreneurs. He discussed agricultural implements like power tillar, tractors, drones, etc which can be operated through mobiles or with remote control. The University has successfully introduced power tillars in Himachal Pradesh. He said that University needs funding through different research projects on farm problems.
Dr Vivek Pathania, General Manager NABARD told that since technology is to be replicated in the field so it is important to reskill and update knowledge of field officers of his bank. He also expressed the need to collaborate with the University for propagating new technology like drones, processing machinery for millets, agri startups, etc which are applicable in farmers' field.
The experts spoke on the 'Potential of backyard poultry for enhancement of livelihood of farming community', 'importance and health benefits of millets and their value added products' and 'scope and importance of drone technology in agriculture and its benefits to hill farmers through custom hiring centres.'
The trainees visited hydroponic cultivation, milk processing unit, natural farming experimental farm, etc. in the University and interacted with scientists.
Dr Rajesh Uppal, Associate Director Extension Education, Manohar Lal, Deputy General Manager and Dr Lav Bhushan also addressed the trainee officers from all over the State.

Palampur 10 October. Dr.D.K.Vatsa, Vice-Chancellor, Chaudhary Sarwan Kumar Himachal Pradesh Agriculture University chaired a scientific advisory committee (SAC) meeting of Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Kukumseri (Lahaul & Spiti).
While appreciating the hardworking farmers of Lahaul & Spiti, he asked them to conserve traditional crops of the tribal areas as these are known for distinct characteristics. The University will help them to get Geographical Indicators (GI) for such crops. He also advised them to adopt farm mechanization and get information and knowledge about the new farm technology from KVK scientists. The Vice-Chancellor also asked the staff to keep their premises neat, clean and in a presentable manner. He also visited the exhibition installed by the KVK, experimental farm of KVK and University research station and interacted with farmers.
Dr. Naveen Kumar, Director Extension Education elaborated on various extension education programmes and spoke on the importance of fodder crops suitable for L & S. He asked farmers to grow university approved crop varieties only.
Dr.Ravindra Kumar, Dean, Dr G.C.Negi College of Veterinary & Animal Sciences discussed problems faced by the livestock keepers in tribal areas and suggested farmers to get in touch with KVK to resolve their problems.

Farm Officers' Workshop on Rabi Crops at CSKHPAU
Using modern technology necessary to attract youngsters towards farming: Vice-Chancellor Dr.D.K.Vatsa
Palampur 7 October. A state level Agriculture Officers' Workshop on Rabi crops was organised at Chaudhary Sarwan Kumar Himachal Pradesh Agriculture University, here today.
While inaugurating the workshop, Chief Guest Dr.D.K.Vatsa, Vice-Chancellor, said that it is imperative to timely utilize modern technology for increasing farm production. This will attract youngsters towards farming. He told that the University is working on use of artificial intelligence, drone technology, crop diversification, etc. He underlined the importance of farm mechanisation for saving time, resources and reducing drudgery. He said that there is need of agricultural engineering college in the State. The Vice Chancellor said that it was encouraging that demand for quality seed is increasing but asked farmers to use only University approved seeds of different crops for maximising their yields.
He said that despite decreasing farm land and deficient rains, country has produced record 330 million tons of food grains. He informed that the crop varieties developed by the University have enabled increase in production and productivity of all major crops but it was not at par with national average. He underlined the need to increase farm production to feed the ever increasing population. He said that marketing network should be strengthened so that all crops, especially millets and crops grown under natural farming system get remunerative prices .He also discussed the need to popularise millets among general masses, challenges of climate change, pollution control, attracting youth towards farming, etc.
Dr.Pawan Kumar, Additional Director of Agriculture, Himachal Pradesh elaborated about arrangements of farm inputs for the Rabi crops. He also detailed various government schemes to increase farm production. He told that a target of 687.37 thousand tonnes for Rabi season has been planned.With a view to cover more area under High Yielding Varieties, 7468 Metric Tonnes certified seed of wheat, pulses and oilseeds will be distributed. Around 54,450 improved farm implements will also be distributed.He asked the University to prepare package of practices for district wise cultivation of millets.
Dr.S.P. Dixit, Director of Research, told that since last workshop, the University has developed four crop varieties. Out of these; Him Palam Gehun 3(HPW 373) and Him Palam Jau 2(HBL 804) have been notified by Central Variety Release Committee. Him Palam Sarson 2 has been approvd and forage oat variety PLP 24 has been identified for cultivation. He said that a high yielding wheat variety HPW 484(Trombay Him Palam Gehun 4) has been recommended by research evaluation committee.He also elaborated on other research achievements.
Dr. Naveen Kumar, Director of Extension Education, detailed major achievements in extension education. He told that 521 training programmes were held with the participation of more than 18 thousand farmers. Around 7400 farmers visited main campus and Krishi Vigyan Kenrdas for technical guidance. He told that M Kisan Portal and WhatsApp groups are used to provide advisory to farmers and more than four lakh farmers were provided advisory. He told that Geo Tagging is done for front line demonstrations on farmers' fields.
Special lectures on 'Importance and health benefits of millets and their value added products' by Dr Ranjana Verma; 'Scope and importance of drone technology in agriculture and its benfits to hill farmers through custom hiring centres' by Er Ashish Dhiman and 'Protection of plant varieities and farmers' rights and its importance' by Dr Nimit Kumar were arranged for the participants. Feedback and interaction session was also held.
Drs.Rajesh Upppal and Luv Bhushan also expressed their views. University statutory officers, scientists, Deputy Directors and other officers from the State Department of Agriculture and around a dozen progressive farmers like Bir Chand from Kullu,Braham Dass from Bilaspur and Purshotam Singh from Hamirpur actively took part in the workshop.

Palampur 4 October. A national workshop on Sustainability of Career Development Centres (CDCs), National Agricultural Research Education System and Blended Learning Platform (BLP) was held at Chaudhary Sarwan Kumar Himachal Pradesh Agriculture University, here today.
Dr D.K.Vatsa, Vice Chancellor as Chief Guest, in his inaugural address called for making Career development centres as dynamic hubs for carving meaningful career paths and fast pace development of farm sector. These help in nurturing talent and creating leaders for the future agriculture. He also advised embracing blended learning approach for innovation in farm education. It is flexible, inclusive and adaptive approach to prepare students for complexities of rapidly changing agricultural landscape. The Vice Chancellor called CDCs and BLP as strong pillars of higher education. Dr Vatsa said that a congenial and excellent environment should be provided to the students by regularly interacting with them. As alumni can play a significant role in providing funds for their alma mater development and practical counseling to the students in career development so they should be involved actively.
Dr Sudeep Marwaha, Head, Indian Agriculture Statistics Research Institute, New Delhi said that Blended Learning Platform has been fully digitalized. Academic management system is necessary for all higher education institutes and they must adopt it for BLP and other academic purposes.
Dr S.K.Soan, Co Principal Investigator, National Academy of Agricultural Research Management (NAARM), Hyderabad, while speaking about CDCs said that there is need to strengthen alumni data, motivate teachers and adopt global best practices. He said that CDCs have trained twenty five thousand students so far.
Dr Y.S.Dhaliwal, Dean, College of Community Science said that CDCs act as a bridge between academic excellence and practical application. BLP integrates traditional teaching methods and power of technology.

'Swachhata Hi Seva' campaign
As part of the 'Swachhata Hi Seva' campaign, a mega cleanliness drive ' Ek Tareekh Ek Ghanta' was undertaken in the entire campus and out stations of the University today. Dr.D.K.Vatsa, Vice-Chancellor highlighted the importance of keeping our surroundings around home and office clean. He said that all should make it a habit to devote atleast one hour every week to clean garbage and dispose it off in an environment friendly manner. The Vice Chancellor himself took part in the drive and visited all the colleges and other offices at main campus.
The cleanliness drive was undertaken at all the constituent colleges, directorates, other offices and units at the main campus. All the eights Krishi Vigyan Kendras and all research station staff also took active part in the campaign at their respective centres. National training on sonography concludes at CSKHPAU.
Palampur 30 September. A national training on comprehensive small animal abdominal sonography concluded at CSK H.P. Agriculture University, here today.
While distributing participation certificates to 23 practising veterinarians from all over the country, Chief Guest Dr D.K.Vatsa, Vice Chancellor said that it is important for practitioners of different professions to upgrade their scientific skills and knowledge. It is far more important and useful to veterinarians as they treat the ones-animals- who cannot communicate their ailments. He said that animals provide much to us including milk, meat, wool, support in agriculture, transportation, company and security, etc. It is our duty to keep animals healthy and disease free. He appreciated the Department of Surgery and Radiology for meticulously organising the training. He underlined the importance of agriculture and allied sciences for humanity.
Dr.Ravindra Kumar, Dean, Dr GC Negi College of veterinary and animal sciences and Dr Adarsh Kumar, Course Director also spoke on the importance of small animal abdominal sonography in diagnosing and treating the animals.

World Rabies day celebrated at CSKHPAU
Palampur 28 September. World Rabies day, with the theme 'All for one, one health for all' was celebrated at CSK H.P.Agriculture University here today.
The Department of Veterinary Medicine, Dr. G C Negi College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences initiated a free anti rabies vaccination drive for pets. Dr.Ravindra Kumar, Dean, told that this will drive will continue on every Friday in the coming months. This will be further followed up by anti-rabies vaccination of the veterinary students against this very fatal viral disease. The celebration highlighted the importance of achieving the goal of one health and the day marked the need to fight the rabies for the benefit of the society.

Dr.D.K.Vatsa, Vice-Chancellor expresses shock at the demise of Dr.M.S.Swaminathan
Palampur 28 September. Dr.D.K.Vatsa, Vice-Chancellor, CSK H.P.Agriculture University has expressed shock at the demise of Dr.M.S. Swaminathan, the father of India's Green Revolution and world renowned farm scientist. The Vice-Chancellor said that Dr. Swaminathan was instrumental in developing high-yielding varieties of paddy that helped the nation to produce high yields to feed the millions and ensured food security to the country. He said that his departure is an irreparable loss to the county but life and achievements of Dr Swaminathan will continue to inspire the scientific community and others engaged in agricultural and allied professions. Dr. Vatsa recollected that during his tenure in office, Dr Swaminathan served in various capacities across departments. He was appointed Director of the Indian Agricultural Research Institute (1961-72), Director General of ICAR and Secretary to the Government of India, Department of Agricultural Research and Education (1972-79), Principal Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture (1979-80), Acting Deputy Chairman and later Member (Science and Agriculture), Planning Commission (1980-82) and Director General, International Rice Research Institute, Philippines (1982-88). Dr.Swaminathan was awarded the first World Food Prize in 1987 following which he set up the M.S Swaminathan Research Foundation (MSSRF) in Taramani, Chennai.

He said that natural farming can solve several issues of deteriorating human, animal and soil health. Palampur 22 September. A peer review team of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research completed its three days visit to CSK Himachal Pradesh Agriculture University.
Dr. D K Vatsa, Vice-Chancellor, told that the six member team headed by well known farm scientist Dr.S.S.Chahal thoroughly reviewed and assessed the infrastrutre and other facilities in all the four constituent colleges, two directorates, farms, laboratories, units and other offices. The team members also interacted independently with all the stakeholders including farmers, students, alumni, parents of students, teachers and non teachers. The team will submit its report to ICAR for accreditation of various UG, PG and doctoral programmes, colleges and the University for further five years. During the exit meeting with the Vice-Chancellor and other statutory officers, the Chairman stated that the University has made tremendous growth during the last five years and many new initiatives have also been taken. He suggested that strenuous efforts should be continued for improvements in academic, research and extension programmes.
The Vice-Chancellor disclosed that the University was working on a status paper on recent natural disasters in Himachal Pradesh and intends to submit a mega project to the Govt of India to thoroughly study it. He also said that a proposal for establishing an agricultural engineering college has been submitted to the State government. He told that admission process in the College of Agriculture will be completed after declaration of merit list by the ICAR.

contributions of legendry engineer Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya on whose
birth anniversary this day is celebrated, he asked engineers to imbibe
vision and virtues of great engineer of the country. He said that Sir
Visvesvaraya is known for construction of dams, developing irrigation
systems, flood protection systems, establishing an agriculture University,
State Bank of Mysore, Iron and steel works, Govt Engineering college etc and
was awarded Bharat Ratna.
He asked students to think out of the box and use new technologies like
Artificial intelligence, autonomous tractors for modern farming. He said
that engineers can solve many problems. He discussed issues like disaster
management, quality infrastructure and roads in hills, etc. He also
discussed importance of agriculture.
He lauded engineers of Himachal Pradesh who have done remarkable engineering
marvels like electrifying all villages. They also electrified highest
village in the world Komic, established highest altitude power house in the
world Rong Tong and first underground powerhouse Bhabha. Dr D.K.Vatsa said
that engineers will be playing major role in making H.P. the first Green
Energy State by March 2026.

future prospects of natural farming was inaugurated at Chaudhary Sarwan
Kumar Himachal Pradesh Agriculture University, here today. As Chief Guest,
Dr Tej Partap, former Vice Chancellor said that trainees should be clear
about the importance and use of natural farming. He asked trainees to learn
the nuances of natural farming diligently. He said that terms like natural
farming, organic farming and zero budget natural farming has been confusing
in the initial stages. Now, situation is different as people are concerned
about consuming and growing safe food.He said that natural farming need deep
research and advanced technology and asked trainees to adopt four principles
of natural farming. It is good for human and animal health and environment.
In his presidential remarks, Dr.D.K.Vatsa, Vice Chancellor said that natural
farming has become very important issue of present times. He discussed the
status of deteriorating soil health due to excessive use of fertilizers. He
said that use of farm yard manure has decreased and such issues need the
attention of scientists for sustainable agriculture with good package of
practices in natural farming. The Vice Chancellor also discussed disease and
insect pest management decreasing use of chemicals. It is important for the
health of people. He also spoke on the need of modernising agriculture so
that the younger generation is attracted towards it by using artificial
intelligence, use of drones, etc.
Dr S.P.Dixit, Director of Research said that pesticide use in crops,
especially in vegetables has increased alarmingly.It is high time that all
concerned should work together for popularising natural farming.
Dr Janardan Singh, Course Director and Head of the Department told that 26
scientists from Maharashtra, Punjab, J & K and H.P. are taking part and
experts from top institutions of the country will be interacting with
trainees during fourteen days training. They will be covering all the
aspects of natural farming. Dr Ranbir Singh Rana, Principal Investigator
informed that training has been jointly organised by Centre of advanced
agricultural science and technology on protected agriculture and natural
farming and Department of Organic Agriculture and Natural Farming in the
host University. Dr Rakesh Chauhan also expressed his views. University

Kala Zeera Utpadan Sangh to get Rs.10 lakh Plant Genome Saviour Community Award, courtesy CSKHPAU
Palampur 17 August. Kala Zeera Utpadan Sangh from Shong village in district Kinnaur will receive prestigious Plant Genome Saviour Community Award worth Rs.10 lakh. While sharing this information, Prof H. K. Chaudhary, Vice-Chancellor, CSK Himachal Pradesh Agriculture University told that it was the initiative of his University which enabled farmers to form the Kala Zeera Utpadan Sangh (KZUS), scientifically documented traits of the crop and applied for this community award in June, last year. Now, the University has been informed by the Registrar of Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers' Rights Authority (PPVFRA) about the selection of KZUS for prestigious Plant Genome Saviour Community Award worth Rs. 10 lakh alongwith a citation. It will be presented to KZUS on 12 September by the Union Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare. Prof Chaudhary said that this is India's prestigious award for acknowledging the farmers' significant contribution in conserving and development of plant varieties.
The Vice-Chancellor told that University's research centre at Sangla (Kinnaur) has been designated as 'Model Farm on Kala Zeera and Saffron.' It is working for scientific cultivation, improvement and popularization of Kala Zeera( black cumin seeds) as a medicinal crop. Kala Zeera though widely grown in forests has been domesticated and currently is under cultivation in an area of about 47 hectare in Shong village of Kinnaur district. This crop has culinary, perfumery, carminative as well as medicinal values as stimulant, expectorant, antispasmodic and diuretic properties. Essential oils namely terpenoids, phenylpropanoids, polyenes etc. in seed possess antioxidative, antifungal and antibacterial attributes. Kala Zeera has premium price in the market and stands as an example of the 'vocal for local' movement. Collection of immature seeds from the forest area and unsustainable and unscientific exploitation of this spice has resulted in reduction of its natural populations and has made it a plant of special conservation concerned in north-western Himalayas.
Prompted by the Vice-Chancellor's guidance, university scientists have compiled all the scientific data and assisted the Kala Zeera growing community to conserve, develop, popularize and formally registering its valuable land races with PPVFRA, Govt. of India.
The Vice-Chancellor appreciated the team of scientists comprising of Drs V.K. Sood, Nimit Kumar and Shailja Sharma who did all the ground work by visiting Shong village in June, 2022 and filed nomination for 'Plant Genome Saviour Community Award' to PPV & FRA. He told that Himachali Kala Zeera has been awarded with Geographical Indication (GI) tag during March 2019 by Govt. of India, thus bringing laurels to the State.
The Vice-Chancellor also expressed his gratitude to Dr. Trilochan Mohapatra, Chairperson, PPV&FRA for recognizing the KZUS as a conserving community and selection for Plant Genome Saviour Community Award, 2021-22 for this precious herb. It was only last week that with the scientific facilitation of the University, a progressive vegetable grower Garib Das from village Burli Kothi near Paprola was selected for Rs. One lakh 'Plant Genome Saviour Farmer Recognition' award by the Govt. of India.
