Department of Entomology at Palampur functioned as minor department of Himachal Pradesh Krishi Vishvavidyalaya with major department stationed at Solan campus from 1966. In November, 1985 with the bifurcation of university, the department attained a full-fledged status to develop skilled and efficient human resource with specialization in Toxicology, Economic Entomology and Apiculture for imparting education to students, undertaking research on management of insect pests, management of honey bees in hill & mountain agro-eco-region and extend knowledge & skill to the hill farmers. The M.Sc. and Ph.D. programmes in the department started from 1986-87 and 1989-90, respectively.
At present the department is housed under College of Agriculture in one of its blocks. The department is entrusted with the specific objectives of evolving IPM strategies for major insect-pests and nematodes of cereals, pulses, vegetables, oilseeds and tea; pest management in organic agriculture; estimation of pesticide residues; and developing management practices for honey bees. Apart from three All India Coordinated Research Projects on White Grubs & other Soil Arthropods, Plant Parasitic Nematodes and Honey bees and pollinators, many ad hoc projects funded by different agencies are in operation in the department to meet the specific needs of hill farmers.

Besides Teaching and Research, the department also undertakes extension activities in collaboration with the Directorate of Extension Education and State departments of Agriculture and Horticulture. Beekeeping trainings to the farmers, orchardists and agricultural officers of Himachal Pradesh as well as for officials of other states are also organized at the main campus as well as at Bee Research Station, Nagrota. The faculty of Entomology at main campus, outstations and Krishi Vigyan Kendras is actively engaged in need based & location-specific research, transfer of technology and advisory services for the welfare of hill farmers.
