IV. OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTIONS

  1. Standardized a technique of 'Side Veneer Grafting' for the vegetative propagation of walnut and persimmon. This technique has been recommended and is now being used commercially for the propagation of these crops.

  2. Selected and recommended two varieties of peach namely 'Kanto-5' and 'Shimizu Hakuto' for the commercial cultivation in the mid hill zone of Himachal Pradesh. Two more varieties from Haven group viz. 'Sun Haven' and 'Red Haven' which are early ripening were identified and recommended for commercial cultivation at elevation ranging from 5000 ft. to 6500 ft. in the state.

  3. Evaluated and recommended two varieties of apple namely 'Mollies Delicious' and 'Tydeman's Early Worcester' for growing in mid hill zone of the state.

  4. After 10 years of planned study, recommended M7 rootstock and Spindle Bush system of training for growing Starking Delicious apple in H.P.

  5. Identified 'Myrobalan B' as promising rootstock for raising Santa Rosa plum orchards.

  6. Established and managed Experimental orchard of Pome and Stone fruits at Fruit Research Station, Kandaghat w.e.f. August 1973 to March, 1976.

  7. Established and managed 150 acres Experimental Orchards and Nursery of temperate fruits at SNS Horticultural Complex, Nauni, Solan w.e.f. March, 1976 to July,1986.

  8. Set up Pomology cum Irrigation Technology Laboratory for research under UNDP/FAO project and procured range of instruments used in recording pomological observations and effects of irrigation and fertilizer treatments.

  9. Designed Post-graduate courses of 500 and 600 series in horticulture and developed a model course of Apple Culture and presented in the symposium held at Bangalore in January, 1986.

  10. Drip (trickle) system of irrigation which is an efficient and water saving techniques for irrigating fruit trees was introduced, established and demonstrated to the farmers in 1988 in apple plantations after getting advanced training abroad.

  11. Trained large numbers of farmers in improved technology of fruit cultivation.

  12. Prepared an appraisal report for the establishment of technical support services in Himachal Pradesh under Integrated Horticultural Development Project for North West Hill Region. Established the plantation of different cultivars of Kiwifruit (Chinese Gooseberry) in the Experimental Orchard at Nauni, Solan. This is a new promising fruit, which has been recommended for cultivation in mid hill and valley areas of the State of Himachal Pradesh after evaluating for 9 years.

  13. Established modern fruit nursery of the Horticulture University at Nauni (Solan) for the production of apple, pear, kiwi fruit, walnut, pecannut, stone fruits and strawberries, under revolving fund scheme of ICAR in 1996-97.

  14. Introduced and planted six varieties of pomegranate and two varieties of fig for evaluation in the Experimental Orchard of the Department of Pomology (Fruit Science) in 1995-96.

  15. Formulated and submitted a research proposal entitled "High density orcharding of hill fruits and their water management including micro-irrigation and fertigation under NATP in 1997-98 to ICAR for funding as Principal Investigator of Hilly Region Research Institutes of the country and University of Horticulture and Forestry, Nauni (Solan).

V. RESEARCH, TEACHING AND EXTENSION EDUCATION EXPERIENCE

  1. 36 years experience of research, teaching and extension in Fruit Science and development of horticulture in Himachal Pradesh.

  2. published more than 100 research papers and extension articles in national and international journals of repute (List enclosed).

  3. guided and supervised 22 Post-graduate students (12 M.Sc. Hort. and 10 Ph.D Hort.) who have completed successfully their respective degrees (year and title of thesis of PG students enclosed). At present one Ph.D. student is working for his degree under Dr.Chauhan's supervision and guidance in the University of Horticulture and Forestry at Nauni, Solan (H.P.)

  4. taught advanced post-graduate courses in Fruit Science relating to irrigation and water requirements, orchard soil management, temperate fruit culture and on special national problems of fruit cultivation in India.

  5. Dr. Chauhan has worked as Resource person of Training and Extension programmes for Subject Matter Specialists of the State Departments of Horticulture and Agriculture in Fruit Crops.

  1. Undertook 4 months training in Irrigation Technology and Orchard Soil Management research at East Malling Research Station, UK as FAO Fellow w.e.f. June to September, 1982.

  2. Attended XXl International Horticultural Congress at Hamburg (West Germany) in August, 1982.

  3. Attended IUFRO Conference on Tree Root Systems and their Mycorrhyzae at Edinburgh and Canterberry (UK) in September, 1982.

  4. Attended and presented a paper in 4th International Symposium on water supply and irrigation in open and protected cultivation held at Padova, Italy w.e.f. 26th to 28th August, 1985.

  5. Visited various Horticultural Research Institutes in Soviet Union under Indo Soviet Cultural Exchange Programme during August/September, 1989.

  6. Visited Italy, Spain and Bulgaria on study tour from 26th May to 15th of June, 1997 under FAO Project No. TCP 4554/IND on "Vegetative Propagation of Walnut" as FAO Consultant and gave recommendations to the Union Ministry of Agriculture and Co­operation for the development of walnut industry in India.

  7. Attended a short course on Post Harvest Technology w.e.f. 11th to 29th August,2001 in Mexico, USA and Thailand sponsored and financed by APEDA, Ministry of Commerce, Govt. of India and State of HP.

VIII. CONTRIBUTIONS AS DIRECTOR OF HORTICULTURE HIMACHAL PRADESH

  1. Reorientation of the Nursery Production Programme on the basis of (i) use of clonal root stocks (ii) creation of a source of bud wood in the form of 'Budwood Banks' for ensuring the supply of quality scion wood to the nursery propagators.

  2. Establishment of virus tested clonal rootstocks of apple(M7, M9, M26, MMl06, MMlll and M793), pear (BA 29 and Quince C) and cherry (colt and F-12) at the Progeny-cum­Demonstration Orchards, Jadhari (Solan) and Kawagdhar (Sirmaur), H.P. for commercial propagation.

  3. Introduction of elite germplasm of apple rootstock (M793) and pear rootstock (BA 29 and Quince C), Red Delicious (Mawlley Selection) and four hazelnut varieties from New Zealand under a special New Zealand Government assisted project.

  4. Introduction of 12 varieties of Blue Berry plants from USA for testing their suitability for commercial cultivation in Himachal Pradesh. 

  5. Introduction of plant material of four wine varieties of grapes for testing their suitability in five distinct agroclimatic regions of HP for commercial cultivation. Introduction of virus free plant material of 25 additional wine varieties of grapes and six grape rootstocks which have been planted at PCDO Bajaura (Kullu).

  6. Introduced 10,000 rootstocks (virus free) of apple, cherry and stone fruits from Netherlands which have been planted at P.C.D.O., Bajaura (Kullu) for multiplication.

  7. Introduction of  new technology of trench layering for the rapid multiplication of clonal root socks of apple, pear and cherry.

  8. Overall improvement in the management of departmental Progeny-cum­Demonstration Orchards and nurseries through the introduction of new orchard and nursery management techniques.

  9. Formulation of a work plan for the acceleration of horticultural growth in Himachal Pradesh during the Ninth Five Year Plan and submission of the same to the Government of India for Central Government Assistance.

  10. Formulation of specialized projects for the introduction of High Density Plantation Technology in apple, pear, cherry and mango.

  11. Popularization of 'in-situ' technique for mango plantation in the rainfed areas of the sub­tropical region of Himachal Pradesh.

  12. Popularization of Drip System of Irrigation in the Orchards of the farmers for improving the fruit productivity and ensuring judicious use of available irrigation water.

  13. Popularization of the protected cultivation of flowers, fruit/vegetable flower nurseries and vegetable cultivation by promoting the establishment of green houses on the farmers' field.

  14. Arranging timely supply of the various plant protection inputs for the control of pests and disease of economic importance like scab, premature leaf fall and red spider mite of apple, mango hopper, red rust of litchi and Phytoplasma disease of peach.

  15. Introduction of the concept of IPM in Plant Protection of Horticulture Crops for which a Biological Control Laboratory is being established at Shimla.

  16. Successful implementation of Market Intervention Schemes (MIS) for apple, mango and citrus fruits.

  17. Promotion of the modern packing technology for the packaging of the fruits for which the corrugated fiber board cartons and plastic crates have been popularized amongst the farmers on a large scale.

  18. Establishment of a Farmers' Education and Training Centre (Kisan Bhawan) at the Fruit and Vegetable Market Azadpur for the education of the farmers in the marketing practices In the main market of Delhi.

  19. Successful organization of State Level Citrus Show at Nagrota Bagwan (Kangra) and active participation in the All India Apple Show at Dehradun wherein the State of Himachal Pradesh bagged 80% of the total prizes awarded in the show.

  20. Promotion of bee-keeping for improving productivity and as a cottage industry by establishing bee keeping and multiplication centres in the private sector.

  21. Revival of the hops industry of the State in tribal area of Lahaul and Spiti District by way of promotion of a joint sector project for establishment of modem hops processing unit at Baddi in H.P. and development of a joint collaborative technical programme for the development of hops in collaboration with Regional Research Laboratory, Jammu.

  22. The cultivation of medicinal and aromatic plants in farmers' fields in H.P. was brought under the purview of the State Department of Horticulture.

  23. Establishment of five centres of Community Fruit Processing and Training in the Sub Tropical region of the State

  24. Greater emphasis was given on the transfer of technology in horticulture to the farmers fields by arranging a large number of farmers training camps at the field level.

  25. Formulation of a pre-feasibility report for the commercial production and processing of 'galgal' in Himachal Pradesh.

  26. A Project Identification Report for the overall development of Horticulture in Himachal Pradesh with a possible investment of Rupees 727 crores was formulated which is now being developed in to a Detailed Techno Economic Feasibility Report for implementation.

  27. Successful organization of a seminar on "50 years of Himachal Horticulture" on the occasion of the Golden Jubilee celebrations of the formation of the State of Himachal Pradesh.

  28. Successful organization of "National Seminar on Himalayan Horticulture - Hortivision 2020" in December 1999 at Shimla. The Recommendations of the Seminar were published and supplied to the various organizations engaged in the Research and Development of Horticulture.
