Who Are we
Department of Animal Genetics and Breeding came into existence as a section of Animal Science Department in College of Agriculture in 1975 till 1987. After establishment of College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (COVAS) it was merged with it and renamed as Department of Animal Production and remained as composite department till 1991. In year 1991 it was carved out as an independent department and named as Department of Animal Breeding and Genetics. This department was also entrusted with the responsibility of teaching Livestock production and management courses. The Livestock Production and Management department was separated out in 1999 on the recommendations of Veterinary Council of India and the present department was renamed as Animal Breeding, Genetics and Biostatistics. Since then the department is taking care of Under Graduate and Post Graduate teaching in the subject besides research and extension. In the Year 2011, the department renamed as Department of Animal Genetics & Breeding.

Our Strengths
- Well established molecular biology lab for research and practical demonstrations : All major equipments needed for molecular genetic studies (PCR, Gel Doc system horizontal and vertical electrophoresis, DNA/RNA quantification, cooling centrifuge are available
- Poultry farm and hatchery unit for on-farm demonstration of poultry and hatchery management
- Propagation of “Himsamridhi” location specific poultry variety suitable to village production system and agro climatic condition of the state using unique native germplasm and improved varieties (around 50000 chicks of developed variety are supplied in different regions including tribal/remote areas with technical support).
- Extension and Outreach: Consultancies/farm visits/ Capacity building of farmer’s/entrepreneurs in livestock and poultry sector
- Four Assistant Professor, in the initial stages of their professional carrier of college, having Ph.D. degree in Animal Genetics and Breeding and having good expertise on Molecular Genetics/Molecular Biology are in the core lab group
