Who Are we

Systematic improvement work in potential vegetable crops was initiated in Himachal Pradesh after the establishment of Department of Vegetable Science and Floriculture in 1976 at Chambaghat, Solan under HPU, Shimla. It was established at CSK Himachal Pradesh Krishi Vishvavidyalaya, Palampur in the year 1985 to teach under-graduate courses and research was also initiated on important vegetable crops simultaneously. During the year 1987, M.Sc. in Agriculture in the discipline of Vegetable Science was started that followed with Ph.D. (Vegetable Science) from the year 1991.

Our Strengths

  • 42 varieties of different vegetable and spice crops have been developed and released in the state for cultivation (18 varieties released during 2015-20).
  • Pioneer in the development of coloured varieties of broccoli namely, green coloured Palam Samridhi and Palam Haritika, purple coloured Palam Vachitra and yellow coloured Palam Kanchan.
  • Leader in the country in the development of leek variety Palam Paushtik.
  • Pink core variety of radish ‘Palam Hriday’ was developed first time in India.
  • Resistance breeding programme on bacterial wilt in solanaceous vegetables and powdery mildew in garden pea has recognition at the national level.
  • First SAU to have Robotic grafting machine to use resistant root stocks on commercial otherwise susceptible varieties in Cucumber, Capsicum and Tomato specifically for root knot nematode and bacterial wilt under protected environment
  • Low chill requiring superior cytoplasmic male sterility (CMS) and Self incompatible (SI) inbred lines have been developed in cabbage and are being exploited in commercial hybrid development.
  • Genetic mechanisms have been developed in different vegetable crops and are being utilized in hybrid development programme (F1s are at evaluation stage)

  • Preparation of e- courses as well as practical manuals of Vegetable and Floriculture courses as per 5th Dean’s Committee.
  • Strengthening of on-going Coaching Classes of students for Competitive Exams (JRF/SRF/ARS/NET)
  • Introduction of Certificate Courses in Protected Cultivation and Cut Flower Production Technology
  • Harnessing potential of Alumni -arranging lectures and job avenues
  • Liaison with HRD cell for Better Placement of students
  • Motivating students for ‘Clean India Mission’
  • Time bound execution of various programmes


  • Development of high yielding, horticulturally desirable and disease resistant varieties of important vegetable crops.

  • Development of horticulturally desirable hybrids by using different genetic mechanisms for open and protected conditions.
    • CMS based in Cauliflower, Cabbage, Broccoli
    • Cucumber: Gynoecy for open and Parthenocarpy for protected
    • GMS/CGMS in Chilli
    • Bacterial wilt and Nematode in Tomato, Brinjal, Capsicum
  • Grafting technology by using resistant root stocks to manage soil borne diseases and pests
  • Collection, evaluation, maintenance and conservation of germplasm of different vegetable crops.
  • Standardization of production technology of important vegetable crops for open and protected environments.
  • Nucleus and breeder seed production of different released varieties.
