Students’ Achievements

Who Are we

The Department of Microbiology was established in the College of Basic Sciences with its establishment in the year 1991. It was strengthened by transferring the Microbiologists posted elsewhere in the University in 1995 with the simultaneous introduction of the M.Sc. programme in the discipline of Microbiology.

The Project Coordinator Unit of All India Coordinated Research Project on “Microbiological Decomposition and Recycling of Organic Wastes”, funded by the ICAR, New Delhi was also placed in the Department till it was shifted to Indian Institute of Soil Science, Bhopal in the year 1998.

The Ph.D. programme in the department was started in 2006-07. Department is also engaged in looking after the undergraduate and postgraduate teaching of the University.

The thrust areas of the Department include Recycling of organic wastes, Biofertilizers, Biocontrol agents, Organic and Natural farming, Fermented foods.

Our Strengths

  • Efficient expertise and research facilities for students in undertaking research in the sub- disciplines of microbiology.
  • The department is well-equipped with modern laboratories to provide quality teaching and research opportunities for students.
  • Recognition of work at national level.
  • Placement of students in different Government institutes/departments.

Achivements

  • Liquid Biofertilizer Technology developed and Patent is granted.
  • Submitted 80 microorganisms of Himachal origin to the National Bureau of Agriculturally Important Microorganisms, MAU.
  • Eleven indigenous probiotics isolates from the fermented foods of Himachal Pradesh were screened, identified and evaluated with respect to internationally used probiotic strains. These isolates will be used for making functional foods having therapeutic values.
  • Yeast isolate from local beverages. 43 isolates were evaluated for baking and brewing traits for their further application.
  • Published 6 Manuals in different areas of Microbiology like Soil Microbiology, Environmental Microbiology, Food Microbiology, Industrial Microbiology, Basic and Applied Techniques in Microbiology.
  • Published peer reviewed research and review articles having good impact factor and NAAS rating along with book chapters.
  • Organized one National and one International Conference.
