Department of Horticulture & Agroforestry

Who Are we

The department of horticulture, CSKHPKV, Palampur came into existence with the inception of HP University in 1970. Prior to the establishment of Dr Y S Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, Solan, UG and PG teaching as well as research and extension activities in this part of state were being conducted in this department. Presently, the department offers the courses at undergraduate level leading to BSc (Agri.) degree, BSc (Home Science/Community Science) degree and PG courses as minor for PG students of different disciplines in the University. The BSc (Agri.) students are also being given hand on training under the Nursery Management course approved as per fifth Deans’ Committee Recommendations from the year 2017. In the year 2017, Agroforestry department was merged with this department and renamed as department of Horticulture and Agroforestry. At present, department is engaged in scientific development of fruit industry in the lower hills and valley areas of HP. The department is also producing quality planting materials of fruit trees like pecan, litchi, mango, kiwi, guava, apple, pear, stone fruits, strawberry, k-lime papaya and of agroforestry trees like Poplar, Toot, Tooni, Salix, Ritha, Leucaena, silver oak, kachnar etc. Apart from this, department is actively engaged with the development of innovative nursery production technologies of important fruit crops with special emphasis on reduction of nursery production duration of fruit plants. Under AICRP on Agroforestry, main thrust area of research is to work on remunerative silvi-pastoral system for the mid-hills of the state in addition to evaluation of quality germplasm of Sapindus and Toona ciliata. Transfer of agroforestry technology through trainings and raising of replicable demonstration trials on different agroforestry systems on farmers’ fields under TSP and SCSP is a regular and an important feature of the programme.
